2024 Movie That Only Made $1.4M At The Box Office Becomes Netflix Global Hit

A 2024 movie that made only $1.4 million at the box office has become a global Netflix hit. Last year, the box office saw some significant successes, with Pixar’s Inside Out 2 leading as the highest-grossing movie, amᴀssing over $1.6 billion worldwide. Following closely, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine garnered $1.3 billion, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Animation fared very well in 2024 with Moana 2 also making $1 billion and Despicable Me 4 making $969 million. Musicals also made a mark with Wicked earning $717 million.

Conversely, 2024 also saw several films underperform in theaters before going on to find renewed popularity on streaming platforms. Madame Web, for instance, bombed at the box office before becoming a global hit on Netflix. Similarly, Argylle, Lisa Frankenstein, and The Bikeriders also bombed at the box office, but became hits upon their streaming releases on various platforms. These instances highlight the evolving landscape of film consumption, where initial box office performance doesn’t necessarily dictate a movie’s ultimate success.

You Gotta Believe Becomes A Global Netflix Hit

It Ranks 5th For This Week

You Gotta Believe, a 2024 movie that made only $1.4 million at the box office, has become a global Netflix hit. Directed by Ty Roberts, who co-wrote the script with Lane Garrison, You Gotta Believe tells the true story of a Texas baseball team of misfits who, after dedicating their season to a teammate’s dying father, accomplish the improbable by making it to the 2002 Little League World Series. The movie stars Luke Wilson, Greg Kinnear, Sarah Gadon, Molly Parker, and The Sandlot‘s Patrick Renna.

Now, after making only $1.4 million at the box office, the movie has become a global Netflix hit. You Gotta Believe ranks fifth on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies for this week with 3.3 million views and 5.7 million hours viewed. It finished in the Top 10 in two countries, Canada and the United States. Globally, it ranks below Back in Action, The Secret Life of Pets 2, The Secret Life of Pets, Father Stu, and above To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Despicable Me 2, Carry-On, and Knight and Day.

What You Gotta Believe’s Success Means For Netflix

Though the movie’s Netflix success may seem surprising considering You Gotta Believe‘s reviews were mixed and that it made only $1.4 million at the box office, it’s not entirely unexpected considering past trends. Inspirational sports movies tend to perform very well on Netflix. For instance, The Hill and The Long Game, both inspirational sports movies starring Dennis Quaid, were global Netflix hits despite making little impression at the box office. You Gotta Believe‘s streaming success reinforces this growing trend of inspirational sports movies that were overlooked in theaters finding new life on Netflix.
