Companion‘s cast is full of impressive stars that bring plenty of genre experience to the horror-comedy sci-fi. Directed and written by Drew Hancock, Companion is a take on a weighty sci-fi concept. What makes it particuarly fun is the way it incorporates a lot of thriller elements and dark comedy. The film centers around a small gathering of old friends at a luxurious (and very remote) cabin in the woods. Iris is the newcomer to the group, the loyal and loving girlfriend to Josh who is nervous about embarrᴀssing herself in front of his friends.
That’s at least the set up for the first act of the film, but what makes Companion so entertaining is the way things quickly spiral out of control and never stop escalating, turning the concept into a whirlwind of plot twists and turns. Grounding the whole thing is an impressive cast that manage to maintain their grounded qualities even as “death by robot” becomes an aspect of the film. Here are the main characters of Companion and who plays them.
Sophie Thatcher As Iris
Born October 18, 2000
Active Since: 2015
Actor: Born in Chicago, Illinois, Sophie Thatcher continues a strong horror streak with her starring role in Companion. Initially appearing in short films before making the transition to television and feature-length projects, Thatcher had already been steadily making a name for herself with memorable supporting appearances in sci-fi films like Prospect when she found her breakout role as the younger version of Nat on Yellowjackets. Thatcher has subsequently become a modern “scream queen” thanks to the show, as well her previous horror films like The Boogeyman and Heretic.

Character: Iris is the protagonist off Companion, and is far from the sweet-natured but shy young woman she’s initially presented as. The trailers for Companion have already revealed that Iris is actually a robot, an artifical companion who is brought on a cabin retreat by her “boyfriend” Josh. The film largely follows Iris as she struggles to overcome her personal hang-ups and externally mandated limitations to escape a quickly escalating situation.
Jack Quaid As Josh
Born April 24, 1992
Active Since: 2012
Actor: Jack Quaid is the other main focus character of Companion. The son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, Quaid made his debut in The Hunger Games. After making memorable appearances in shows like Vinyl and films like Logan Lucky, Quaid found his big break as Hughie Campbell in The Boys on Prime Video. On top of his live-action work, Quaid has also racked up some impressive voice-over performances in acclaimed animated shows likeStar Trek: Lower Decks and My Adventures With Superman.

Character: Josh is Iris’ boyfriend and the second most important character in Companion. After convincing Iris to accompany him and his friends to a nice weekend getaway, Josh reveals himself to actually be an enтιтled man who purchased and programmed Iris. Their flawed relationship is the thematic core of Companion, and sets up a deep exploration of the character.
Lukas Gage As Patrick
Born May 28, 1995
Active Since: 2013
Actor: Born in San Diego, California, Lukas Gage has been earning roles in film and television since 2013. After minor appearances in American Vandal, he broke out thanks to his appearances in shows like The White Lotus, Fargo, and You. This success has also translated to some memorable appearances in recent films like Road House and Smile 2, highlighting his flexibility as a performer.

Character: Patrick is one of the other guests at the weekend holiday. Patrick is, like Iris, a romantic partner to one of the friends who are reuniting during the getaway. Patrick is specifically dating Eli, who is an old friend of Josh and Kat. Patrick and Eli are deeply in love with one another, which serves as a direct contrast to the relationship between Iris and Josh.
Companion’s Supporting Cast & Characters
Companion‘s тιԍнт Character Focus Keeps The Twists Coming
Companion is a relatively тιԍнт thriller, with much of the plot following a small handful of characters. The other two guests at the weekend in the woods are the most important supporting characters, helping set off the plot and playing into the twists and turns that define Companion. Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) appears as Eli, a snarky friend of Josh and Patrick’s boyfriend. Their other friend is the aloof Kat, played by Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), who is dating the owner of the house, Sergey (The Death of Stalin).
Much of Compainion remains rooted on these characters, with almost the entire plot occurring in Segey’s house or the nearby woods. This isolated nature allows the film to remain almost focused on that core cast. There are a handful of minor characters who appear in the film played by Woody Fu (Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), and Jaboukie Young-White (Strange World) that would spoil the film to explain. Companion is a twisty film that finds way to keep the focus on the compelling cast and their various manipulations around one another.
