Alien: Covenant Sequel Chances Get More Hopeful Response From Michael Fᴀssbender: “[Ridley Scott] Is A Master”

Michael Fᴀssbender remains open to the possibility of returning for a sequel to Alien: Covenant. The film follows members of the тιтular colony ship as they discover what they believe is an uncharted paradise. However, they soon encounter David (Fᴀssbender), the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition, and find themselves battling a hostile alien lifeform in a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly fight for survival. Despite a 65% Rotten Tomatoes score, Fᴀssbender’s portrayal of David was praised, with some critics noting the character’s philosophical and morally ambiguous nature.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Fᴀssbender confirmed his openness to returning for another Alien installment, stating that he would be interested in working with director Ridley Scott again. Fᴀssbender noted that working with Scott on Alien: Covenant was a rewarding experience and that he holds great respect for the director’s work. Check out the interview below:

For sure, I mean, I love working with Ridley. It was such a great experience. He’s phenomenal, he’s such an inspiration. You know, he does these big films. They’re so difficult to make, and he’s a master. He’s fantastic.

What This Means For The Alien Franchise

An Alien: Covenant Follow-Up Could Expand The Universe

Fᴀssbender previously expressed interest in a sequel to Alien: Covenant in 2019, though recently he admitted to ScreenRant he doesn’t think about it much. With Fᴀssbender being more open about returning, there seems to be a likely possibility for an Alien: Covenant sequel. Fᴀssbender’s portrayal of David remains a memorable aspect of the film, and a sequel could offer a chance for more insight into the character’s motivations. Moreover, Scott had planned an Alien: Covenant sequel, but it was scrapped. However, he indicates that it may not stay that way for much longer.

The Alien franchise has been a poster child of sci-fi cinema since the release of the original film in 1979. More recent entries, including Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, and Alien: Romulus (which was directed by Fede Álvarez), have continued to expand the universe. The potential return of previous figures like Fᴀssbender could provide continuity to the franchise and generate renewed interest, especially after Alien: Romulus‘ recent release in 2024.

A Potential Alien: Covenant Sequel Seems Likely

While it’s unclear whether a sequel to Alien: Covenant will happen, Fᴀssbender’s interest offers a glimmer of hope for those still invested in the prequel. As the actor acknowledges Scott’s exceptional ability to direct large-scale films, there’s reason to believe that any future Alien: Covenant project, if it happens, would bring the same level of innovation seen in previous installments.

In November 2024, it was reported that Scott is developing another Alien movie, though plot details and characters remain under wraps. It does seem to be separate from the in-development Romulus sequel.

Whether or not the sequel comes to fruition, Fᴀssbender’s comments reaffirm the importance of continuity and character development in sustaining the Alien franchise. The lasting impact of Alien: Covenant indicates that the franchise still holds potential for new stories and extensive exploration, with Fᴀssbender’s potential return offering a promising direction for future films.
