Moana 2 Digital Release Date Revealed After $1 Billion Box Office

Moana 2‘s digital release date has been revealed. While Disney had originally planned to make a multi-episode TV series to continue Moana and Maui’s story, the company announced in early 2024 that they would instead be releasing a feature-length sequel, Moana 2. This ended up paying off for Disney, as Moana 2 has made over $1 billion worldwide. At the time of writing, Moana 2 has made over $1.02 billion and is now the third-highest grossing 2024 release worldwide, behind only Inside Out 2 and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine.

Per People, Moana 2‘s digital release date has been revealed. Moana 2 will be available to watch digitally starting on Tuesday, January 28. This precedes the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release, which will come on Tuesday, March 18. Both the digital and physical releases will include bonus content, including behind-the-scenes videos, deleted scenes, and a full-length sing-along version of the movie.

What This Means For Moana 2

Moana 2 Is Staying Off Disney+ For Now

This announcement notably does not include a streaming release date for Moana 2. As a Disney movie, the sequel is sure to be released via the company’s platform, Disney+, at some point . With the physical release date not until March, however, that streaming release date is likely at least about two months off. This will give Disney time to continue profiting from Moana 2 between digital and physical sales, and lingering theatrical revenue.

The Moana 2 digital and physical release strategy is a reminder of just how much the release plan for this movie has changed. There was a time when the only sequel to Moana would have been available on Disney+, as a TV series. Now, Disney is holding off on putting the film on streaming for as long as they possibly can. It also proves that Disney’s pivot to release Moana 2 theatrically was a success, as they are trying to profit as much as possible.

Our Take On Moana 2’s Digital Release Date

Moana Dying Down In Theaters Could Allow Another Movie To Shine

With Moana 2‘s digital release date on tap for this week, it will be interesting to see how quickly Disney ends up pulling the movie out of theaters. Right now, the company still has Mufasa: The Lion King playing theatrically. As such, taking Moana 2 off the screens might allow a better chance for the Mufasa and his pride to gain some late-game momentum in a slow time for releases. Whatever Disney ends up doing, Moana 2 will be sure to continue its success upon its digital release.
