A Complete Unknown Box Office Pᴀsses Another Major Milestone As Timothée Chalamet’s Oscar Win Chances Increase

A Complete Unknown has now pᴀssed another major box office milestone. The music biopic directed by James Mangold covers the early career of Bob Dylan as he is influenced by various artists in Greenwich Village and eventually rises to his own, unconventional fame. Playing the “Blowin’ in the Wind” singer is Timothée Chalamet, who is getting awards buzz for his role. In addition, A Complete Unknown cast includes Monica Barbaro, Edward Norton, Ella Fanning, Joe Tippett, Eriko Hatsune, Scoot McNairy, and Lenny Grossman.

Per The Numbers, A Complete Unknown has crossed the $60 million mark at the worldwide box office. At the time of writing, the biopic has grossed $60.6 million worldwide, $57.4 million of which has come from the domestic box office.

What This Means For A Complete Unknown

A Complete Unknown Has More Runway Ahead

The movie’s latest milestone is impressive for a music biopic, but there is still more box office momentum for the film. While the movie was released in the United States on December 25, A Complete Unknown‘s international rollout is still in full swing as it becomes available in more markets over the coming weeks. The story is almost sure to have more appeal in the United States, but it will nonetheless see some increased sales over the next few weeks, boosting this box office total.

A Complete Unknown‘s budget is estimated to be between $50 to $70 million. With films usually needing to make between two to two-and-a-half times their budget to profit, the music biopic still has a long way ago before it reaches a significantly profitable point. Still, the movie has a lot of room to grow, especially as potential Academy Awards nominations this week might elevate the movie’s profile significantly. Music biopics have variable profitability, so to cross the $60 million mark is an impressive.

Our Take On A Complete Unknown’s Box Office Success

A Complete Unknown‘s Oscar Chances Are Strong

This most recent milestone arrives just before the Oscar nominations announcement comes on Thursday, January 23. Chalamet is a lock to get nominated for Best Actor and is considered highly likely to win the award. If the movie keeps doing well at the box office, Chalamet’s chances will be even higher, as Academy voters will be even more likely to vote for him if A Complete Unknown is top of mind due to a recent success. If the film can continue its momentum beyond the $60 million mark, Chalamet may be taking home the coveted award on March 2.
