A lot has been said about Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s relationship in The Twilight Saga, but one theory not only makes Edward’s character better, but it also turns his story with Bella from a love one to a tragedy. In 2005, Stephenie Meyer introduced readers to her world where humans, werewolves, and vampires coexist, though these classic creatures are unlike traditional ones. In this world, vampires and werewolves are enemies, vampires sparkle under the sun, and werewolves don’t need a full moon to transform. Despite the dangers of each, that doesn’t stop Bella from getting involved with them in different ways.
The main focus of the Twilight book series and movies is the relationship between Edward and Bella, which goes from a forbidden one to a “happy ending.” Despite how toxic Edward and Bella’s relationship is throughout the Twilight Saga, by the end of Breaking Dawn – Part 2 they are happily married, are parents to Renesmee, and Bella has become a vampire. However, a theory turns their happily ever after into a tragedy, while also improving the controversial character that is Edward Cullen.
Twilight Theory Explains Edward Cullen Fell In Love With Bella’s Humanity
Bella’s Biggest Appeal Was Her Humanity, Not Her Blood
Edward and Bella met in Twilight when Bella moved to Forks and started attending the local high school. Edward was taken by surprise by the smell of Bella’s blood and by the fact that her mind was the only one he couldn’t read. Despite all the dangers that dating Bella would bring (more for her than him), Edward gave in to his feelings for Bella and they started a relationship. Edward broke up with Bella at the beginning of New Moon for her safety but they got back together, and he told Bella his one condition to turn her into a vampire: marriage.
After defeating Victoria and her army of newborns in Eclipse, Bella and Edward got married in Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and Bella got pregnant during their honeymoon. At the end of Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Bella’s heart stopped while giving birth to Renesmee and Edward injected her with his poison, which ultimately saved her and transformed her into a vampire. Breaking Dawn – Part 2 saw the Cullens and their allies’ battle against the Volturi, and Bella and Edward getting their happy ending, with Bella letting Edward into her mind for the first time.
The mystery of Bella’s mind, her clumsiness, and more reminded Edward of what being a human is about, thus being the first semblance of humanity he had felt in many, many years.
Throughout the Twilight Saga, it was established that Edward was drawn to Bella not just for her blood and mental shield but because he felt the need to protect her, but a Reddit theory suggests Edward was drawn to Bella due to her humanity. The mystery of Bella’s mind, her clumsiness, and more reminded Edward of what being a human is about, thus being the first semblance of humanity he had felt in many, many years. Being around Bella also gave Edward a sense of normality he hadn’t had in a long time, which made him forget at times that he was a vampire.
By Turning Into A Vampire, Bella Ended With What Made Her “Special” In Twilight
Bella Made A Huge Mistake By Becoming A Vampire
Bella saw her mortality as an obstacle in her relationship with Edward, to the point where she had nightmares about growing old while Edward remained young-looking. This is why Bella insisted on being turned into a vampire, but Edward saw no problem in staying with her for as long as she lived – as the author of the theory puts it, Edward was aware that Bella would die one day, but that’s what made their relationship special to him. Because of this, Bella becoming a vampire ended what made her “special.”
While this would raise the question of why Edward himself turned Bella into a vampire if what he loved was his mortality, the author explains this was the one time he made an exception, but only because he had Bella’s life in mind. Bella coming back as a vampire gave her a new “life”, but she no longer had her humanity.
Edward found in her a reason to “live” in his immortality, as she reminded him of what being a human is like, with all its ups and downs.
Edward didn’t love Bella because he felt the need to protect her or because she was a “challenge” to her (both very questionable reasons given how toxic their relationship ended up being), but because he found in her a reason to “live” in his immortality, as she reminded him of what being a human is like, with all its ups and downs. Becoming a vampire left Bella without this, and reminded Edward of what he and now Bella lost.
Edward & Bella Might Not Have Had Their Happy Ending After Breaking Dawn
Unfortunately, Edward & Bella Might Have Not Gotten Their Happily-Ever-After
All this not only makes Edward a more complex character (though that doesn’t excuse his bad parts), but it also turns his supposed “fairy tale ending” with Bella into a tragic one. The Twilight Saga led its audience to believe that everything Edward and Bella went through led to their happy ending as a married couple of vampires with a human/vampire hybrid kid, but that might not be the case at all. If what Edward loved about Bella was her humanity, then their marriage might not last forever.
Supposing their marriage ended at some point after Breaking Dawn, it would be a tragedy for both.
The author of the theory explains that, by losing what made Bella a “rarity” and “unique” to Edward, she became one in a bunch as a vampire. Surely, they both got what they wanted – Edward married Bella and Bella became a vampire –, but no longer had that one element that made him fall for her. Supposing their marriage ended at some point after Breaking Dawn, it would be a tragedy for both: Edward lost the person he loved the most and who gave him a reason to “live”, while Bella gave her humanity and everything else up for a man she ended up divorcing.
