“Needs It Now More Than Ever”: Vin Diesel Announces Fast 11 Filming Change & Return To Franchise’s Roots After 25 Years

Fast X: Part 2
star Vin Diesel provides a new filming update on the sequel, revealing recent events have prompted a return to the franchise’s roots. Following the release of Fast X in 2023, Diesel will return as Dom for at least one more movie, marking his eleventh outing after first appearing as the character back in 2001’s debut Fast & Furious movie. The star and producer previously confirmed that Fast X: Part 2 filming started in November of last year, teasing a return to practical car action ahead of the movie’s planned 2026 release.

Diesel now takes to Instagram to share a new Fast X: Part 2 update, revealing that filming for the rest of the movie will take place predominantly in L.A. Diesel’s confirmation comes as wildfires continue to devastate areas around L.A., with the actor revealing that costar Jordana Brewster, who has been part of the franchise since the first movie, encouraged him to use the sequel to support the city in its time of need. Check out Diesel’s post and caption below:

Last week, during the fires that displaced LA… my sister Jordana reached out to me and said… Please have Universal film the rest of Fast X Part 2 in LA.

Los Angeles needs it now more than ever…

Los Angeles is where Fast & Furious started filming 25 years ago… and now Fast will finally return home. All love…”

More than 150,000 people have been displaced as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires.

What Fast 11’s Filming Update Means For The Movie

L.A.’s Connection To Fast & Furious Explained

2001’s The Fast and the Furious is the only movie in the franchise to take place almost entirely in and around L.A., in addition to filming there, but parts of the sequels have been filmed in the city, too. Dom’s L.A. house, for example, has appeared in multiple Fast & Furious movies, and racetrack scenes in F9: The Fast Saga (2021) were filmed at Irwindale Speedway in the city.

Diesel’s latest post, then, is seemingly an indication that L.A. itself could play a prominent role in Fast X: Part 2 story, just as it did in the first installment. This is in keeping with some of Diesel’s recent posts, which have teased that the next movie will be going back to the franchise’s roots. A key complaint aimed at recent installments is just how ridiculous and over-the-top the action has become, and the star is seemingly using his platform to ᴀssure fans that Fast X: Part 2 will be shifting away from this approach.

In addition to Fast X: Part 2, a Hobbs Fast & Furious spinoff movie is also in development.

Our Take On Diesel’s Fast 11 Filming Update

A Return To The Franchise’s Roots Will Be A Welcome Change

Fast X reviews were mixed from critics, with criticism mostly aimed at the film’s struggle to balance its mᴀssive cast of characters, but the action did catch some flack as well. The action was hyped before the film’s release as a return to practicality after the ridiculousness of F9, but it ended up being fairly over-the-top, save for a handful of scenes. If Fast X: Part 2 brings back grounded action to the streets of L.A., this could prove to be a great way to send off the franchise and the Toretto family.

That being said, the globe-trotting nature of the Fast & Furious movies has become a major part of its appeal, and it’s possible that some will be disappointed if the movie takes place mostly just in one city. Many questions remain about exactly how Diesel will wrap everything up with Fast X: Part 2, but the actor is evidently attempting to recapture the magic of that first movie that came out nearly 25 years ago.
