“I’m Trying To Soak It Up”: Dylan O’Brien Emotionally Reacts To His Acclaimed Thriller Finally Scoring A Release Date After A Full Year In Limbo

Dylan O’Brien reacts to the release of his movie Ponyboi. Now 33 years old, O’Brien had his breakout role in 2011, wherein he played one of the main characters in Teen Wolf. Three years after his Teen Wolf debut, O’Brien would go on to play Thomas in The Maze Runner. This popular book adaptation series had two sequel movies, including The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and The Maze Runner: The Death Cure. After this series, O’Brien has gone on to act in several projects, including the drama Ponyboi, which premiered at Sundance in 2024.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant for his new film Twinless, O’Brien speaks about Ponyboi‘s release date and his response. In the interview, O’Brien confirmes that Ponyboi‘s release date is June 27. The actor expressed graтιтude for this release date, calling it “amazing” because Ponyboi is “a very dear film to” him. He adds that “the fact that it’s getting a small theatrical release is incredible.” Check out the full quote from O’Brien below:

ScreenRant: I really loved Ponyboi at last year’s Sundance, and we’ve waited so long for the world to see it.

Dylan O’Brien: Thank you so much. It just got announced! I think it was yesterday, [and the release] is June 27th.

ScreenRant: What does it feel like to finally have it come out?

Dylan O’Brien: Amazing. That is another one that is a very dear film to me, and River [Gallo] is very dear to me. To see that moment finally come? We’ve been waiting! We’ve been waiting to find out if it was going to come out and in what capacity.

The fact that it’s getting a small theatrical release is incredible. That’s obviously pretty few and far between these days. You can’t guarantee that, so that feels so nice. What a special film, and to have the news of that yesterday and then this today? I’m trying to soak it up.

What This Means For Ponyboi

Ponyboi Is Finally Releasing

As O’Brien alludes to, he and the film’s team had to wait a whole year from the movie’s premiere to find out that it would get a theatrical release. This release will combine traditional screenings with community-based, direct-to-audience screenings done in partnership with the platform Gathr. Its release will come towards the end of Pride Month, which is thematically appropriate for the movie, which follows the story of an interSєx Sєx worker who gets involved in a drug deal. In addition to O’Brien, Ponyboi‘s cast features River Gallo, Murray Bartlett, and Victoria Pedretti.

After all this waiting, it sounds like the cast and crew behind Ponyboi is excited to finally get this movie on big screens across the country. As for O’Brien himself, his reference to “this today” refers to the premiere of Twinless at this year’s 2025 Sundance Film Festival. This James Sweeney-directed film is a comedy about two grieving men who form an unlikely friendship after bonding in a support group. The film stars O’Brien and Sweeney alongside Lauren Graham, Aisling Franciosi, and Tasha Smith.

Our Take On Ponyboi’s Release

The Movie Was Well-Received

It is strange that Ponyboi has taken this long to come out, as the movie was well-received post Sundance. Ponyboi received strong reviews including from ScreenRant‘s Graeme Guttmann, who gave it 8 out of 10 stars, writing “thanks to Gallo’s sharp screenplay and Arango’s intimate direction, Ponyboi goes beyond cliché for something more profound.” With all the discussion about the portrait of gender and LGBTQ+ idenтιтy in 2024’s Emilia Pérez, Ponyboi will release during an optimal time wherein audiences are more acutely aware of gender politics on screen and the importance of authentic representation.
