American Primeval Star’s Stylish Sci-Fi Movie Is Surging On Streaming After Having Been A Box Office Bomb In 2017

American Primeval was an ensemble show at its core. Exploring the origins of the American West through sweeping cinematography and dramatic storylines, the cast includes mothers, children, fathers, settlers, and indigenous people fighting to maintain their land rights. One such actor is Dane DeHaan, who plays Jacob Pratt in the series. Jacob is a Mormon man who leads his family across the frontier to Utah. In addition, the American Primeval cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Derek Hinkey, and Joe Tippett.

The Netflix Western series may be DeHaan’s most recent notable role, but it is far from his first foray into acting. While he was in occasional TV episodes in big shows like True Blood and Law & Order: SVU, DeHaan’s career broke out in the sci-fi movie Chronicle. Years later, he joined the Marvel world, playing the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and portrayed Lockhart in the eerie psychological horror film A Cure for Wellness. A year after that, DeHaan would go on to act in a high-budget but poorly received sci-fi film.

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets Is A Streaming Hit

Valerian Bombed At The Box Office

Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets is now doing well on streaming. The 2017 sci-fi space adventure is based on the French comic series Valerian and Laureline. The movie chronicles the two leads, played by DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, as they try to protect Alpha, a metropolis that hosts species from a thousand planets. The film received lackluster reviews, receiving a mere 47% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and a 53% Popcornmeter. The movie was also considered a box office failure, making $225.8 million on an estimated $177.2 million budget.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has become a streaming success on Max. The film is at No. 5 on the streamer’s charts in the United States today (January 24). This also represents growth from January 23, when the movie first appeared on the Max charts at no. 10.

Our Take On Valerian’s Delayed Success

Dane DeHaan Is A Major Contributor

Though it is on a different streamer, Valerian‘s success can likely be attributed to the success of American Primeval on Netflix. Those who just watched the epic Western series may be more acutely aware of DeHaan, and interested in his other projects. For all its faults, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is also a highly stylized sci-fi film. Even with some outdated effects, the movie’s artistry may appeal to even modern viewers.
