Who Is Miku Martineau? Star Trek: Section 31’s Young Georgiou Breakout Actress Explained

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Section 31Miku Martineau delivers a breakout performance as the young Emperor Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek: Section 31. Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, Star Trek: Section 31 is the first Star Trek movie made for streaming on Paramount+. Headlining Star Trek: Section 31 is Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, who reprises her fan-favorite role as Emperor Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Section 31 finds Emperor Georgiou in hiding in Star Trek‘s 24th-century “lost era.” On Stardate 1292.4, Section 31 recruits Georgiou, who runs a nightclub called the Baraam outside of United Federation of Planets space. Georgiou and Section 31 face a super weapon and a new threat to the Federation. This enemy is intimately tied to the sins of Emperor Georgiou’s past as the ruler of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire. Star Trek: Section 31 goes all the way back to the moment the young Georgiou became Emperor.

Miku Martineau Plays Young Philippa Georgiou In Star Trek: Section 31

Teenage Georgiou Did The Unthinkable To Become Emperor

Star Trek: Section 31 begins in the Mirror Universe with the revelation that Philippa Georgiou won a contest not unlike The Hunger Games. Philippa outlasted and killed 16 other young people to become Emperor. But because the Terran Empire enforces no attachments to her previous life, Philippa also murdered her own family. Pᴀssing her final test, Georgiou subjugated her lover San (James Huang) as her slave. Miku Martineau delivers an emotional and riveting performance that perfectly conveys her anguish and ruthless choices while channeling Michelle Yeoh’s fearsome Emperor.

Miku Martineau is a Japanese-Canadian actor and singer. Starting her career as a voice actor at the age of 12, Martineau gained global attention opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson in Netflix’s action movie Kate. Miku also appeared in the TV series Ruby and the Well. Martineau stars in Honor Society on Paramount+ opposite Angourie Rice and Gaten Matarazzo. Miku has released two singles, “Stay in the Moment” and “When I Cry.” As the young Georgiou, Martineau is now forever part of Star Trek.

Miku Martineau Should Return As Young Georgiou in A Star Trek: Section 31 Sequel

There’s More Of Young Georgiou’s Story To Be Told

Young Georgiou Sword Section 31

At the end of Star Trek: Section 31, Emperor Georgiou confronts the adult San (James Hiroyuki Liao) and saves the Federation from her own sins in the Mirror Universe. While Philippa’s story with San comes full circle, there is still more to be told about how the young Georgiou consolidated her power in the Terran Empire. Star Trek: Section 31 only scratched the surface of what happened to turn the teenage Philippa into the despot who conquered the Mirror Universe.

A potential sequel to Star Trek: Section 31 has ample opportunity to tell more of the young Emperor Georgiou’s story. Hopefully, Miku Martineau would come back as young Georgiou. Martineau authoritatively commanded Star Trek: Section 31′s striking prologue. Miku’s powerful performance gave crucial depth and dimension to Emperor Georgiou and provided the context for just how much Georgiou has changed from the young woman she once was.
