In 2024, Disney managed to achieve a major box office milestone that has only been achieved three times in cinema history. There were many surprises at the 2024 box office, from movies like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga underperforming to the notable decrease in superhero movies making up the biggest earners. There were also several box office flops in 2024, including huge movies like Joker: Folie à Deux and Megalopolis.
On the flip side, several movies performed well at the box office in 2024 after a disappointing 2023. From the smaller movies that became box office success stories in 2024 to the huge, blockbuster films like Dune: Part Two and Wicked, the year proved full of projects that earned big profits for major Hollywood studios. One such studio that had another expectedly successful year was Disney, which will undoubtedly continue with upcoming Disney movies too. 2024 marked a difference for Disney though, in that the studio managed to achieve something that has only been done three times before.
Every $1 Billion Movie In 2024 Came From Disney
Disney Claimed The $1 Billion Club For Itself
The milestone in question is Disney producing the only movies that crossed the $1 billion threshold in 2024. The first movie to do this was Inside Out 2 in June 2024, which surpᴀssed expectations and smashed multiple box office records, including becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. The second Disney-owned movie to cross $1 billion was ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine in July 2024, the first MCU movie since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame to do so – not counting the Sony Pictures-produced Spider-Man movies. The final movie to cross this milestone was Moana 2.

The only other movie that came close to crossing the $1 billion milestone in 2024 was Universal’s Despicable Me 4, which earned $969 million worldwide. Due to that movie falling short at the final hurdle, the 2024 $1 billion club consists of Disney-only movies. Both Marvel Studios (ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine) and Pixar (Inside Out 2) are subsidiaries of Walt Disney Studios, combining with the Walt Disney Animation Studios effort of Moana 2 to mark the fourth time in cinema history this has happened.
Disney Is The Only Studio To Ever Release Every $1 Billion Movie In A Single Year
With A Minimum Of Two Movies Released
What makes this feat even more impressive is that Disney is only competing with, well, Disney. The House of Mouse is the only studio to have released every $1 billion movie in a single year, going on to do so four times after the initial effort. The first came in 2010 when Disney released Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland, which grossed $1.06 billion and $1.02 billion respectively. Three years later in 2013, the only movies to cross $1 billion were Iron Man 3 and Frozen, both earning over $1.2 billion.
Another three years then pᴀssed before Disney completed the three-peat. This time, Disney’s success was even more unanimous and impressive, with the studio having four $1 billion movies in 2016. These were Captain America: Civil War ($1.1 billion), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($1.05 billion), Finding Dory ($1.02 billion), and Zootopia ($1.02 billion). Eight years later, Disney repeated the impressive milestone with the three aforementioned movies, solidifying the studio as an undisputed king of the box office once more.
