Robert Downey Jr. & Zach Galifianakis’ Forgotten Road Trip Comedy Streaming On Netflix Deserves A Look Based On Its Supporting Cast Alone

Robert Downer Jr. and Zach Galifianakis once starred in a road trip comedy тιтled Due Date, and if not for them, it deserves a look based on its supporting cast. Netflix continues to be one of the biggest and most important streaming platforms, even if many of its original movies and TV shows haven’t succeeded. A big part of Netflix’s success is its extensive catalog, and it keeps adding new content every week from various genres and for viewers of all ages – and among its latest additions is Due Date.

Before he brought to life a different version of the Joker, Todd Phillips was best known for directing comedies. Phillips had gained recognition for directing The Hangover trilogy between 2009 and 2013 and Due Date, released in 2010. The latter counts on the talents of Robert Downey Jr. (taking a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and Zach Galifianakis as its lead actors, and though it received mixed reactions from critics, it was a commercial success. Due Date is now on Netflix, and if not for Downey Jr. and Galifianakis, it should be given a chance for its supporting cast.

Due Date Is A Comedy Road Trip

Written by Phillips, Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland, and Adam Sztykiel, Due Date introduces the audience to Peter Highman (Downey Jr.), a successful architect working in Atlanta. Peter is ready to fly home to Los Angeles to be with his wife, Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), who is about to give birth. On his way to the airport, Peter comes across Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis), an actor also flying to Los Angeles, but he also plans to scatter his recently deceased father’s ashes in the Grand Canyon. However, after Ethan uses the words “terrorist” and “bomb”, he and Peter are escorted off the plane.

Desperate to get to Los Angeles with Sarah and now also without his wallet, Peter decides to drive to Los Angeles and agrees to do so with Ethan. However, that’s only the beginning of their problems, as their trip is full of obstacles and wild situations that keep delaying their arrival at the City of Angels. As mentioned above, Due Date wasn’t a hit with critics, holding a 39% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (and thus being “rotten”), but it performed well at the box office. Due Date is now streaming on Netflix, perfect for those looking for a chaotic but entertaining road trip comedy.

Due Date Has A Very Notable Cast – Who Else Stars In The Road Trip Comedy

Due Date Has A Strong Supporting Cast

If not for the comedic skills of Downey Jr. and Galifianakis and their on-screen chemistry, Due Date is worth checking out for its strong supporting cast. Due Date also features Jamie Foxx as Darryl Johnson, Peter’s friend who comes to his rescue during his and Ethan’s chaotic road trip; Juliette Lewis appears as Heidi, the same character she played in Phillips’ 2003 comedy Old School, thus creating a small universe of Philips comedies; and Danny McBride has a brief appearance as a Western Union employee.

Also part of Due Date’s supporting cast is Matt Walsh as a TSA Agent, RZA as an Airline Screener, Keegan-Michael Key as a new father (just like Peter), and Phillips himself has a minor appearance. Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Angus T. Jones also have cameo appearances as their Two and a Half Men characters near the end of Due Date. The comedy style and chaotic story of Due Date might not be for everyone, but it’s undeniable that it has a solid main and supporting cast.
