Ariana Grande-Butera teases a new Glinda song in Wicked: For Good. While the first Wicked movie only includes songs from the Broadway musical, the second movie will feature some original songs. Cynthia Erivo previously shared that she co-wrote and performed an original Wicked: For Good song for Elphaba that moved the crew to tears. Wicked: For Good‘s story will see Elphaba and Glinda separated after the game-changing events that culminate in “Defying Gravity.”
While speaking with Variety, Grande-Butera confirms that composer Stephen Schwartz has written a new Glinda song in Wicked: For Good. She teases that the song showcases a side of Glinda that has never been shown before as she makes a crucial decision that occurs offstage in the Broadway musical. Grande-Butera also expresses how grateful she is to be the first Glinda to perform the song and is even hopeful that it may eventually be incorporated into the stage show. Check out her comments below:
It’s a pivotal moment in Glinda’s journey. It shows a side of her we’ve never seen before. In the stage show, this transformation happens offstage. But in the movie, we get to see her make the decision that defines who she is. It’s a privilege to sing this song and be the first Glinda to bring it to life.
What This Means For Wicked: For Good
Glinda’s New Song Will Be A Major Part Of The Second Movie
Warning: There are spoilers ahead from the second act of the Wicked Broadway musical.
While original songs in Wicked: For Good were previously teased, it is now confirmed that both Elphaba and Glinda will get their own new songs. With both characters and their relationship being at the heart of the story, it is only fitting there are new songs for both of them. The new music will be one of the biggest draws for the movie, as it will be new to all audiences, and will help Erivo and Grande-Butera continue to shape the distinct portrayals of their beloved characters.
As for the transformation that Grande-Butera alludes to, it may be connected to Glinda taking a stand against the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Glinda spends much of the second act as a mouthpiece for them. Even though it appears on the surface that Glinda has everything she ever wanted, she is deeply unhappy. Glinda’s new song may see her confronting the unfortunate role she has played in hurting Elphaba, and in finding the courage and resolve to ensure that justice is served by banishing the Wizard from Oz and arresting Madame Morrible.
Our Take On Ariana Grande-Butera’s Comments
Everything About The New Song Sounds Promising
Anticipation for the second movie is already high after Wicked‘s positive reviews and record-breaking box office success. Grande-Butera’s tease has now further escalated that anticipation. Knowing that Schwartz wrote the new Glinda song is a promising sign that it will be true to the spirit and musical style of the Broadway musical. Grand-Butera’s hopes of the song being incorporated into the stage show, and her comments about it showing a transformation that occurs off-stage, are also good signs that it will not interfere with the source material, and should be able to be seamlessly incorporated while enhancing Wicked: For Good.
