Set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2025 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Julia Garner will bring the Silver Surfer to the big screen for the first time in almost 20 years. She is joined in the cast by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich. Garner will be the first female live-action Silver Surfer, with the previous onscreen iteration being voiced by Laurence Fishburne. Notably, these Silver Surfers are not the same character, as Garner will portray Shalla-Bal while Fishburne voiced Norrin Radd.

Recently, Garner spoke with ComicBook.com about her excitement not just over joining the MCU, but joining alongside a talented roster of actors. The star explained that she felt “so grateful [she gets] to be a little part” of “a big universe.” She went on to praise her fellow castmates, stating: “Everybody on that job, I think the casting is phenomenal, and they’re so wonderful.” Garner also added that director “Matt Shakman is amazing.“

The film’s synopsis teases both characters’ appearances, stating that the Fantastic Four “must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.” To face this cahllenge, the superhero team is “forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bonds.” The Fantastic Four: First Steps further teases a conflict that “gets very personal,” though how Shalla-Bal factors into the story remains to be seen as the Silver Surfer is usually depicted as an underling of Galactus who betrays him. However, Norrin Radd is usually the Surfer to fill this role.
