action movie that grossed $428 million is getting a new streaming home. Decades after making his WWE debut, Johnson is now one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet. Following his jump to acting, Johnson appeared in a number of action movies, like The Rundown (2003), Faster (2010), Fast Five (2011), Snitch (2013), and Pain & Gain (2013). More recently, Johnson has embraced more family-friendly fare, but that doesn’t mean he’s left his action roots behind.
The mid and late 2010s saw the release of a handful of classic Johnson action movies, but the budgets got larger and they became action blockbusters instead of genre movies in the mid-budget space, reflecting the actor’s growing star power. In addition to several Fast & Furious movies, Johnson starred in San Andreas in 2015 before going on to have a big year in 2018, starring in two buzzy тιтles. One of these тιтles was Skyscraper, which was ultimately a disappointment, while the other was based on a popular video game.
Johnson is set to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs for a Fast & Furious Hobbs spinoff movie.
Rampage Is Coming To Prime Video
The Johnson Action Blockbuster Arrives Before The End Of The Month
Rampage is set to make the jump to Prime Video later this month. Hitting theaters only three months before Skyscraper, Rampage hails from director Brad Peyton and is based on the 1986 video game of the same name. The movie features Johnson starring as Davis Okoye, a primatologist who must leap into action to stop three pathogen-infected animals from destroying Chicago. Rampage, which also stars Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Jack Quaid, earned mixed reviews from critics but was ultimately a box office success, making a profit on top of its $120 million budget.

Per Decider, Rampage is now expected to make its debut on Prime Video on January 26, 2025, after previously being available to stream on Netflix and Max. The Johnson action blockbuster is one of a number of тιтles set to land on the streamer in the second half of the month, including Jurᴀssic World (Jan. 16), Blink Twice (Jan. 21), Friday Night Lights (Jan. 31), Knocked Up (Jan. 31), and Scarface (Jan. 31).
Rampage marks Johnson’s second major video game adaptation after Doom (2005).
Why You Should Watch Rampage
Audiences Were More Receptive To The 2018 Movie
Rampage may not have been a big hit with critics, but it did generally go over well with audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, the blockbuster has a 51% critics’ score but a 72% audience score, with user reviews praising the movie for not taking itself too seriously and for offering up plenty of CGI-heavy thrills.
After disappointments like Black Adam (2022) and, most recently, Red One (2024), Rampage feels like a Johnson movie from a different era, but there’s definitely some fun to be had if one is looking for an easy watch. Though it suffers from some of the same problems that many of Johnson’s recent movies suffer from, including arguably a weak script and a lack of originality, it’s one that may be worth checking out when it lands on Prime Video.
