This Horror Movie Character Shockingly Has A Higher Kill Count Than Most Horror Legends

A surprisingly strong contender for the most lethal horror movie monster has a shockingly high kill count. Thanks to their enduring nature and lethal tactics, many of the horror genre’s most famous villains have earned dozens of kills over the course of their respective series. Characters like Michael Meyers keep pushing the limits of the past, with the kill counts in films like Halloween Kills pushing the characters to new horrifying heights.

The long-running nature and supernatural qualities of some of these characters explain how they’re able to amᴀss such high body counts. The most iconic villains in the genre have amᴀssed plenty of kills in various horror films, reboots, and remakes, with franchises like Halloween or Friday the 13th amᴀssing plenty across decades. However, there’s a surprisingly strong contender for the highest kill-count in the genre, even when limited to on-screen kills and ignoring the original franchise that inspired it. This actually underscores the most horrifying elements of that series and how the villain actually targets people.

The Ring’s Samara Has A Higher Kill Count Than Many Horror Movie Legends

Samara Is An Unexpectedly Effective Killer

Going by on-screen human kills, Samara from The Ring franchise has earned more on-screen kills than many other iconic villains. One of the questions during 2025’s edition of Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of Everything challenged players to determine which horror movie character had the more fearsome body count between It‘s Pennywise, A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Kruger, Alien‘s Xenomorph, or Samara from The Ring. The rules specify that they’re only counting on-screen human deaths. Although the ageless Pennywise or the legions of Xenomorphs might have earned more kills over their respective timelines, those aren’t counted.

Samara has killed 169 people in her three English-language films, giving her a serious edge over the compeтιтion.

Samara is even limited by the number of films counting her, as the rankings only reflect her English-language appearances instead of the full Japanese film franchise that inspired 2002’s American remake of The Ring. Despite this, Samara’s three English-language films give her a whopping victory. Pennywise has killed 16 people on-screen, placing him fourth. Freddy killed 46, while the Xenomorph has killed 71 people. By comparison, Samara has killed 169 people in her three English-language films, giving her a serious edge over the compeтιтion.

Why The Ring’s Samara Is So Lethal Compared To Other Horror Movie Legends

The Way Samara Picks Up Kills Sets Her Apart From Other Horror Movie Characters

At first glance, Samara’s kill count seems straightforward enough. In the original film, Samara killed ten people, either by crushing their insides or forcing them to commit suicide. Samara only killed two in The Ring Two, meaning her on-screen kills weren’t as high as many other iconic monsters of the horror genre. However, her attack on Carter in the opening scene of 2017’s Rings resulted in an on-screen plane crash, which killed 156 people. That gave Samara a serious edge in the compeтιтion.

Samara’s kills notably have a domino effect on the people around her. While Freddy, Pennywise, and the Xenomorph do a good job of targeting and bringing down one target at a time, Samara’s killing the right person at the right time can result in other deaths. Even escaping Samara, as in The Ring‘s ending, means spreading the curse. Even those few people capable of surviving Samara are forced to trade someone else for themselves. That’s what makes Samara such an effective horror character, as she can force people to commit monstrous acts to save themselves in The Ring movies.
