A particularly harsh dry season, coupled with powerful winds, caused one of the largest and costliest natural disasters in American history. The two largest blazes, the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, have burned almost 40,000 acres across Southern California alone at the time of writing. This Has Been A Scary Week

I love Los Angeles. I would visit it as a kid, and marveled each time at how the city grew from my Grandmother’s corner of Culver City to the bizarre joys of Venice Beach, the iconic sights of Hollywood, and the gorgeous trails of Griffith Park. For the last week, my wife and I have watched the skies go dark from our home in North Hollywood, go-bags packed and painfully aware that a stray gust could bring any number of blazes towards us, our son, and our dog.

We’ve been lucky to not lose our home, but we know people who have. We’ve been blessed to keep our health, even while friends can’t go outside for risk of breathing the air. People have lost their homes, sometimes for generations. People have lost family members, dear friends, or animal companions. Countless lives, rich and poor alike, will never be the same. This has been devastating. It’s also been inspiring. Tragedy brings out the best and worst in people, and the Los Angeles wildfires have drawn out far more of the former than the latter.

For every person who has tried to use this tragedy for personal gain or cynical political points, there have been two dozen who have donated, volunteered, drove to help, opened doors to friends, and just reached out in concern for one another. Families and strangers alike have united in solidarity in the face of catastrophe. Firefighters from across state lines and national borders have come to help. I love this city, and it means so much to know that so many other people do too. Stay safe, stay informed, and stay inspired.
