The Devil Wears Prada 2 Gets Cautious Update From Stanley Tucci: “I Would Be So Happy”

A possible sequel to The Devil Wears Prada has received a cautious update from Stanley Tucci, one of the stars of the original movie. Based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, The Devil Wears Prada was released theatrically in the United States on June 30, 2006, and became a box office success, grossing $326.7 million against a production budget of around $40 million. Tucci was a core member of The Devil Wears Prada cast, which also starred Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt.

Now, in an interview with Variety, Tucci gave a cautious but optimistic update on the potential of returning for a follow-up to the hit comedy-drama. When asked if he had heard anything about a sequel being developed for The Devil Wears Prada, the actor revealed that he knows a sequel is being worked on, but that he couldn’t say any more about it, before claiming that the first movie was among his favorite experiences. Check out his full comments below:

I know they’re working on it. If it happens, I would be so happy, but I cannot give you any information. Otherwise, I’ll go to the actor’s prison or something. [The original] was one of the best experiences ever.

What These Comments Mean For The Devil Wears Prada 2

It Doesn’t Seem Far Along, But This Is A Sequel That Could Easily Happen

Tucci’s comments suggest that The Devil Wears Prada 2 might not be coming to screens any time soon, but there is a good chance this sequel could happen. The fact that Tucci remained coy and stated that he couldn’t give any information as he would risk going to “actor’s prison” suggests active developments. This would infer that something is going on behind the scenes that is working toward producing a sequel, but there will be many factors to deal with in this regard.

“Making a movie is always a risky proposition, and as studios are still recovering from the stunted box office during lockdown, sequels are often considered a safe haven.”

A lot will have to happen to get a sequel off the ground, and one of the major stumbling blocks could relate to trying to get the original cast back together. Attempting to develop a schedule that can accommodate Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci would be a big ask, considering the success and popularity of the stars since the first movie. There’s also the need to get a strong script and a director, and the market needs to be right, but it does feel like Tucci would definitely return for the sequel if he were asked.

Sequels Prove A Safe Haven In Uncertain Times

Making a movie is always a risky proposition, and as studios are still recovering from the stunted box office during lockdown, sequels are often considered a safe haven. They have a pre-existing universe and character base to call upon, and audiences already have a level of investment. This is why I think The Devil Wears Prada sequel will likely happen in some capacity, ᴀssuming the casting can be sorted. The number of movies and TV shows like The Devil Wears Prada shows that there is an audience appeтιтe for fashion-related stories.

Streep’s character, Amanda Priestly, is believed to be based on notorious US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
