Goonies 2 In Development With Original Writer Returning

After many years of rumors and false starts, The Goonies‘ long-awaited sequel may finally be on a positive development track. Richard Donner’s 1985 classic saw a group of kids uncover the treasure map of a long-lost pirate captain, setting them on a quest to find it while avoiding the grip of a ruthless crime family. The Goonies cast featured Sean Austin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green as the тιтular group of young adventurers.

As ᴅᴇᴀᴅline reported on the shifting strategies of Warner Bros. for the 2025 calendar, the outlet reported that the studio seeks to fall back once more on several proven franchises alongside its filmmaker-driven projects. One such project was a new Goonies sequel, with Chris Columbus set to return and pen a treatment, having written the screenplay for the 1985 movie. Columbus has previously been reported to have been part of discussions with Donner, executive producer and fellow writer Steven Spielberg, and Lauren Schuller Donner to develop a sequel, as revealed during a reunion event in 2020.

What Columbus’s Involvement Means For The Goonies’ Sequel

Columbus’s Involvement Doesn’t Ensure The Entire Cast Will Reunite

While Columbus joining the production of a potential Goonies sequel is a promising sign, it is presumed that the movie is still early in development. As such, it is unclear just what direction he will take with the franchise. With almost 40 years having pᴀssed since the original movie was released, any new feature that takes the trip back to the coast of Astoria, Oregon would likely focus on a new group of kids, potentially the children of the original gang members to solidify its status as a legacy sequel.

However, it is also difficult to determine which cast members would be willing to return. Quan is having a continued renaissance of his career following his award-winning role in 2022’s Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, while Brolin, Astin, and Plimpton have had continued success. On the other hand, Cohen retired from acting and became an entertainment lawyer. Furthermore, Feldman has previously stated that their return would be dependent on Donner’s involvement, making their reprisal difficult to predict following the director’s pᴀssing in 2021.

Our Thoughts On Columbus’s Potential Goonies Sequel

The Movie’s Lasting Legacy Shows Audiences Still Wish To See More

Forty years have pᴀssed since the hunt for One-Eyed Willie’s treasure, but The Goonies has continued to influence Hollywood to this day. Alongside being an inspiration for Stranger Things, which also starred Astin, the series was most recently cited as an influence for the Star Wars Disney+ series Skeleton Crew.

No doubt, there would be an appeтιтe for a sequel to The Goonies, should development continue on Columbus’s treatment beyond the writing phase. However, with the cast’s past statements, it then leaves what director could bring the gang back together while also being guaranteed to please audiences. Past attempts show that it is no easy feat, but Columbus’s involvement could ensure that this sequel attempt never says die.
