Is Something Borrowed 2 Still Happening? Updates On The John Krasinski Rom-Com Sequel, Explained

Released in 2011, Something Borrowed was a rom-com adaptation of the bestselling 2004 novel of the same name written by author Emily Giffin. Directed by Luke Greenfield and starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin, Colin Egglesfield, and John Krasinski, Something Borrowed tells the story of a woman named Rachel (Goodwin) who ends up sleeping with her best friend’s fiancé on her 30th birthday, which starts an affair. It’s an enchanting film covering the messiness of friendship and love, and it ends with the words, “To Be Continued…“, leading many to believe Something Borrowed 2 would soon follow.

It’s always nerve-wracking when a film ends on a cliffhanger with plans for a sequel, given that there is no guarantee that a follow-up will ever be made. For Something Borrowed, it felt like a sequel would actually happen, especially since there is a second book to pull from, тιтled Something Blue (2005). Emily Giffin even wrote the screenplay for Something Borrowed, but given that it came out 14 years ago, the idea of Something Borrowed 2 happening faces a few big obstacles.

The Last Update About Something Borrowed 2 Was In 2017

Emily Giffin Turned In A Script In 2014, But Nothing Has Materialized

Although Something Borrowed failed to inspire critics and was a box office disappointment, there were still talks of Something Blue being adapted for a sequel. Given that Emily Giffin was tasked with helping to write the sequel as well, there is a possibility that Something Borrowed 2 could have turned out much better than the original, as they learned from the mistakes made in the first film. In a Twitter (now X) post in 2014, Emily Giffin confirmed that a Something Blue script had been turned in, making it feel like it was really going to be moving forward.

With how long the movie has gone without any substantial news since then, it is more than likely no longer moving forward.

Unfortunately, there have been only a few updates over the years regarding the status of Something Borrowed 2, with Giffin posting a picture of her and John Krasinski on Facebook back in 2017 being one of the last updates about the sequel. With how long the movie has gone without any substantial news since then, it is more than likely no longer moving forward, which is a shame for fans of the books and the first film. It is important to note that a mysterious IMDb page for Something Blue exists, but there is nothing actually on it. Never say never, though.

The Something Borrowed Actors May Have Aged Out Of Their Roles For The Sequel

Kate Hudson as Darcy looking surprised in Something Borrowed

The biggest challenge that Something Blue would face coming out now is how close narratively each novel takes place. Something Blue starts almost immediately after, following Darcy dealing with the revelation of her best friend and fiancé falling in love, along with an unexpected pregnancy. Given that all the main characters in both Something Borrowed and Something Blue are in their early 30s, a sequel could prove difficult.

In an episode of “Coffee With Colin”, from Something Borrowed star Colin Egglesfield, Ginnifer Goodwinn addressed this issue, saying that Giffin would “have to write another book” and that they are “a lot older than those characters are supposed to be.”

A Something Borrowed 2 adaptation would likely want to take advantage of John Krasinski’s popularity, but it could be tough to get him to come back to the role now, given his A-list status in Hollywood. Krasinski’s star has blown up since 2011, and now that he is routinely directing films, he might not have the time to return if something ever comes up. It all just seems unlikely that Something Blue will ever come to fruition, leaving Something Borrowed on a cliffhanger that might not ever be resolved on the big screen.
