The Mask 2 Return Chances Get Eager Response From Cameron Diaz After Jim Carrey’s Recent Comments: “I’ve Been Riding Those Coattails From Day One”

The Mask star Cameron Diaz is keen to reunite with Jim Carrey and return to the role that first made her a household name. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Carrey’s iconic 1994 comedy served as Diaz’s first movie role and would cement her as one of the most sought-after actors of the decade. Despite a disastrous 2005 sequel without his participation, there have been multiple calls to see Carrey return to the franchise. Late last year, the comedian admitted that he was still open to a potential sequel, given a good enough idea is found.

During a recent interview with Access Hollywood for her new Netflix movie Back in Action, Diaz was told of Carrey’s own interest in returning for The Mask 2 and was asked if she would be willing to return alongside him. Seemingly unaware of Carrey’s interest in returning to the franchise, Diaz enthusiastically suggested that she would be onboard for The Mask 2 in the event that Carrey is involved. Check out her response and the video below:

Oh my god, did he say that? If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one.

What Cameron Diaz’s Comments Mean For The Mask 2

The Movie Desperately Needs A Proper Sequel

The Mask Jim Carrey Cameron Diaz

With 1994’s The Mask proving a major box office success, and continuing Carrey’s astonishing rise as one of the breakout comedic talents of the time, it was not surprising that plans to have him return for a sequel were set in motion shortly after its release. Ultimately, however, Carrey would pᴀss on the opportunity, forcing plans for the sequel to be overhauled into a standalone story that would introduce a whole new protagonist in the form of Jamie Kennedy’s Tim Avery in 2005’s Son of the Mask.

With Diaz currently undergoing her own career resurgence following an extended break from the acting profession, a potential return to her first starring role would be the perfect vehicle for her return to the public eye.

With the first sequel to The Mask lambasted by critics and stumbling at the box office, Diaz’s most recent comments could potentially see the franchise find a much-needed course correction and deliver a sequel befitting the original movie’s enormous success. With Diaz currently undergoing her own career resurgence following an extended break from the acting profession, a potential return to her first starring role would be the perfect vehicle for her return to the public eye. Moreover, with Carrey’s own continued success with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the timing has never been better.

Our Take On Diaz & Carrey Returning For A Proper Mask Sequel

Hopefully The Right Sequel Story Can Be Found

With Son of the Mask frequently touted as one of the worst sequels ever made, most audiences would be keen to see Carrey’s and Diaz’s groundbreaking comedy finally be given the kind of follow-up it deserves. With both stars now expressing their willingness to return, hopefully it will not be too much longer before a suitable story can be found to lure them both back. Moreover, with Diaz’s own comedic sensibilities having been greatly refined since their last shared outing, seeing her reteam with Carrey for The Mask 2 could provide her with one of her most exciting movie prospects yet.
