SNL Cast Members’ Movie Becomes Surprise Streaming Success 2 Years After Release

A comedy movie starring and written by multiple Saturday Night Live cast members has suddenly become a streaming success over a year after its release. Since its debut in 1975, NBC’s long-running sketch comedy show has served as the springboard for 11 feature-length films based on some of the show’s most popular sketches and characters, which have seen mixed success. Their first foray into film came in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s The Blues Brothers, which earned over $115 million at the box office against its $27 million budget.

The success of Wayne’s World in 1992, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, encouraged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael to produce more film adaptations featuring popular characters. He brought back 1970s characters for Coneheads in 1993, followed by It’s Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, and The Ladies Man. However, most of these movies struggled both critically and commercially, with It’s Pat performing so poorly that Touchstone Pictures pulled it from theaters just a week after its release.

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain Becomes A Surprise Streaming Success

It Ranks 7th On Peacock’s Top 10

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain has become a surprise streaming success. Written by and starring Please Don’t Destroy, who joined SNL in 2021, the 2023 film follows a fictionalized version of the comedy troupe as they embark on an adventure to find treasure hidden in a nearby mountain. Other than Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall, the film features SNL cast member Bowen Yang, former SNL writer Conan O’Brien, Meg Stalter, X Mayo, Nichole Sakura, Cedric Yarbrough, and Sunita Mani.

Now, over a year after its release, the movie has become a surprise streaming success. Per FlixPatrol, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain suddenly appeared on Peacock’s Top 10 in the United States a day ago. It ranks below Despicable Me 4, Twisters, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Penguins of Madagascar, Conclave, Sing 2 and above Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Speak No Evil.

Why Is Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain Suddenly A Streaming Success?

SNL Recently Returned From Its Holiday Hiatus

Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain was sent straight to streaming on Peacock in November 2023 and was largely overlooked. However, in January 2024, the movie has suddenly appeared on Peacock’s Top 10. It’s unclear why, though it could coincide with the return of Saturday Night Live season 50 on January 18 after its holiday hiatus, hosted by Dave Chappelle. Whatever the reason may be, Peacock subscribers are seemingly enjoying Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain for all its hilariously dumb fun, even if it’s over a year late.
