You Already Met The Daughter Of Agatha All Along’s Death 8 Years Ago According To 1 Major MCU Theory

The debut of Lady Death in Agatha All Along answers a major 8-year-old MCU mystery in a shocking new Marvel theory. Aubrey Plaza first appeared in Agatha All Along, the MCU’s first WandaVision spinoff, as Green Witch Rio Vidal, though it wasn’t until later in the series that her true nature as the personification of death itself was revealed. Death’s introduction to the MCU has spurred theories about her prominence in the franchise’s history, as death has plagued many characters since the MCU began.

In Marvel Comics, Lady Death finds herself embroiled in romances with the likes of Thanos and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool, but her most persistent love interest in the MCU has been Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Agatha likely hasn’t been Death’s only romantic pursuit, however, as the ancient cosmic enтιтy has surely formed connections to many characters over the millennia. This informs a shocking new theory that helps to explain a mystery that dates back to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and connects Aubrey Plaza’s Death to Cate Blanchett’s Goddess of Death, Hela.

Hela’s Mother Has Never Been Seen In The MCU

Frigga Is Not Hela’s Mother In The MCU

Hela with her horned crown in Thor Ragnarok

Cate Blanchett debuted in Thor: Ragnarok as Hela, the Goddess of Death and Odin’s firstborn child, making her Thor’s biological half-sister and Loki’s adoptive half-sister. While Loki’s heritage lies with the Frost Giants of Jotunheim and Thor’s parents are Odin and Frigga, Hela’s ancestry is more of a mystery. It has been mentioned several times in the MCU that Frigga is not Hela’s mother, and the Goddess of Death was in fact Odin’s child with a woman prior to his marriage with Frigga, but the idenтιтy of Hela’s mother has never been revealed.

In Marvel Comics, Hela is the child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, but this is not the case in the MCU. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor referred to Hela as his half-sister, and her variant repeated this sentiment in What If…? season 2, episode 7, “What If… Hela Found the Ten Rings?,” where she noted that Frigga is her father’s “new girlfriend.” This repeтιтive discussion of Hela being Thor and Loki’s half-sister implies Hela’s mother could be important in the MCU, and a new theory may explain the mysterious character’s idenтιтy.

Death Is Hela’s Mother: MCU Theory Explained

Death Existed Long Before Meeting Agatha Harkness

A new theory shared by Reddit user El_Presidente376 suggests that Aubrey Plaza’s Death could be Hela’s enigmatic mother in the MCU. Hela is the Goddess of Death, which establishes a clear connection between her and the cosmic enтιтy herself. Beyond that, their physical appearances are also strikingly similar, with both having black hair, pale skin and favoring green and black clothing. Since Death existed long before meeting Agatha Harkness, it would make sense that, at some point, she found herself involved with Odin.

As he waged war on the Nine Realms to bring them under Asgard’s rule before the births of Thor and Loki, Odin evidently has a strong relationship with death, and so may have come into contact with the actual personification of Death. In his infamous quest for knowledge and influence, Odin could have seduced the enтιтy, leading to Hela being born, creating the perfect soldier and death-accustomed child for the brutal King of Asgard. This could have occurred millennia before Agatha Harkness was even born.

MCU Theory Sets Up The Perfect Place For Aubrey Plaza’s Death To Return

Death Doesn’t Yet Have A Future In The MCU

Death in Westview in Agatha All Along episode 8

Agatha All Along quickly became one of the MCU’s most popular projects in 2024, thanks in part to the incredible performance of Aubrey Plaza as Death. The finale ended with Agatha Harkness being transformed into a ghost and leaving with Billy Maximoff to find his reincarnated brother, but Death’s whereabouts are currently unknown. There has been a huge amount of speculation that Plaza could reprise the role of Death in the MCU’s future, but Marvel Studios hasn’t yet revealed whether this will happen, but this MCU theory creates the perfect opportunity.

Agatha All Along has been such a success for Marvel Studios that there has been speculation of a season 2 being developed, though there has been no official word on this yet from Marvel Studios or series creator Jac Schaeffer.

If Death turns out to be Hela’s mother in the MCU, it’s possible that Aubrey Plaza could become involved in the as-yet-unannounced Thor 5 sequel. Cate Blanchett could also reprise her role of Hela, as her demise wasn’t actually seen on-screen in Thor: Ragnarok, so Thor 5 could explore a reunion between Hela and her own mother, Death. Agatha All Along provided only a glimpse of the full extent of Death’s power, so it would be great to see her return, perhaps in battle against Thor, to show off even more impressive powers.
