According to exclusive information from THR, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially confirmed that a brand new Lord of the Rings film is in development, tentatively тιтled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past”!

This is not a typical sequel, but a story full of surprises and deep emotion. The film is set 14 years after Frodo left Middle-earth, when Samwise Gamgee, Merry, and Pippin have grown up and have their own lives. They decide to reenact the first steps of their great journey. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor the Fair, accidentally discovers a long-buried secret and is determined to find out why the War of the Rings was almost lost from the very beginning.

The script was penned by an unexpected “dream team” trio:

Stephen Colbert (famous TV host and a huge Tolkien fan)
His son – Peter McGee (a talented screenwriter)
Philippa Boyens (a veteran of the series, who co-wrote the scripts for all three original Peter Jackson films)

The film will be produced by Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films and Stephen Colbert’s Spartina Industries, and is expected to begin filming after the completion of The Hunt for Gollum (directed by Andy Serkis, scheduled for release in 2027).

Most notably: “Shadow of the Past” will delve deeply into the deleted chapters of Peter Jackson’s original trilogy – from “Three Is Company” to “Fog on the Barrow-downs.” This means we will finally get to see the Ancient Forest, Tom Bombadil’s house, and many other mysterious details that fans have been waiting for for two decades!

This marks the first time Stephen Colbert – one of the most famous Tolkien fans on the planet – has officially stepped into a creative role for the Middle-earth universe. With his experience and love for the original works, he promises to bring a fresh perspective, respecting the spirit of the books while still offering surprises.
