Lawmakers Sound Alarm: Pentagon and F-35 Office Face Immediate Classified Probes Over Jet Incident

Washington, D.C. – March 28, 2026 – Senior members of Congress from both parties are demanding immediate classified briefings and formal investigations into the Pentagon and the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) following a high-profile F-35 fighter jet incident during a combat mission over Iran.

The alarm was triggered after U.S. Central Command confirmed that an F-35 Lightning II sustained damage from suspected hostile fire, forcing an emergency landing at a forward U.S. airbase in the Middle East. The pilot ejected safely and is reported in stable condition, but the exact nature of the damage — and why America’s premier stealth fighter was vulnerable — remains shrouded in secrecy.

In a joint statement issued late Thursday, key lawmakers on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees expressed deep concern over what they described as “serious operational and programmatic failures” within the F-35 ecosystem.

“American taxpayers have invested over $2 trillion in this program. When our most advanced fighter is hit during a combat mission, we need straight answers — not spin,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a vocal critic of Pentagon acquisition practices. “The F-35 Joint Program Office and senior Pentagon leadership must appear before the committee in a classified setting within 48 hours. This is not optional.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) echoed the call, adding: “We’ve seen repeated reports of software delays, maintenance shortfalls, and readiness rates hovering around 50%. If those chronic issues contributed to this incident, heads must roll. Our pilots and allies deserve better.”

Sources familiar with the matter say the probes will focus on three core areas:

Tactical and Technical Vulnerabilities: Did known deficiencies in the F-35’s latest Technology Refresh-3 (TR-3) software upgrades or sensor suite play a role in the jet’s inability to evade or detect the threat?
Sustainment and Readiness Failures: Pentagon Inspector General reports from late 2025 already flagged Lockheed Martin’s performance on sustainment contracts. Lawmakers want to know if those documented problems left the aircraft under-prepared for high-threat environments.

Oversight and Accountability: Why was the F-35 program office slow to address long-standing issues with spare parts, mission-capable rates, and contractor accountability despite billions in annual payments?

A senior defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Pentagon has already initiated an internal mishap investigation but acknowledged that congressional pressure has escalated the matter to “classified probe” status.

Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for the F-35, released a brief statement: “The safety of our pilots and the performance of the F-35 remain our top priorities. We are fully cooperating with all ongoing reviews and continue to deliver the world’s most advanced multirole fighter.”

The incident comes at a sensitive time for the F-35 program. Production is at record levels, yet operational availability continues to lag behind targets. With escalating tensions in the Middle East and renewed great-power compeтιтion, critics argue the jet’s reliability is no longer just a budgetary issue — it is now a national security one.
Congressional leaders have scheduled a closed-door session for early next week. Defense analysts expect the classified probes to produce recommendations that could reshape future funding, oversight, and even the F-35’s operational doctrine.

As one veteran lawmaker put it off the record: “This isn’t about one jet. It’s about whether the most expensive weapons program in history can actually deliver when it matters most.”
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. The classified nature of the probes means public details may remain limited, but the political pressure is only intensifying.
