The Israeli military claims to have attacked the Caspian Sea port city of Iran, destroying several naval vessels.

In an unprecedented escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on March 19, 2026, that it had carried out its first airstrike on Iranian naval infrastructure in the Caspian Sea – an area thousands of kilometers away from traditional H๏τspots.

According to IDF spokesman Major Nadav Shoshani, Israeli fighter jets precisely targeted the port of Bandar Anzali (Gilan province, northern Iran) – one of Iran’s most important naval bases in the Caspian Sea. The attack took place on the night of March 18, 2026, destroying a number of strategic targets including:

Several Iranian Navy warships: including missile boats, corvettes, support vessels, and patrol boats (some sources estimate around 4-6 ships, accounting for nearly half of Iran’s Caspian fleet).

The port command center – which manages all Iranian naval operations in the Caspian Sea region.

Central ship repair and maintenance facility.

The IDF claims to have “completely neutralized Iran’s naval capabilities in the Caspian Sea” and released drone footage of powerful explosions at the port. This marks the first time Israel has extended its military operations to this inland sea – a route frequently used by Iran and Russia for transporting goods, including weapons and drones.

Western intelligence sources (according to the Wall Street Journal) indicate the attack also targeted a crucial arms shipment route between Iran and Russia. The Caspian Sea has long been a key logistical corridor for Tehran to supply Shahed drones, artillery shells, and other military equipment to Moscow during the Ukraine conflict. The destruction of infrastructure at Bandar Anzali is seen as a major blow to this supply chain.

Iran has not yet issued an official statement on the extent of the damage, but images posted by local residents on social media show plumes of black smoke rising from the port area and several severely damaged ships. Russia has expressed “deep concern” about the potential for conflict to spread to the Caspian Sea, and affirmed that it will closely monitor developments.

This is a bold move by Israel, demonstrating its superior intelligence and long-range air strike capabilities. The attack not only weakens Iran’s naval capabilities in the north but also sends a clear message: no area of Iranian territory is “safe” if Tehran continues to support anti-Israel forces.

The tense situation in the Middle East continues to be complex, and observers are closely watching the next reactions from Tehran and Moscow.
