Iran’s Coordinated Attack on Diego Garcia and USS Eisenhower – Complete Military Analysis

Iran launched its largest coordinated attack to date targeting two key strategic US targets in the Indo-Pacific: Diego Garcia Air Base (a British-American territory) and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKE Strike Group) operating in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.

This was not just a test of Tehran’s long-range missile capabilities, but also a strategic escalation aimed at stretching US forces, testing multi-layered defense systems, and sending a clear message: “We can strike simultaneously on land and at sea, thousands of kilometers away.”

1. Strategic Context: Why did Iran choose this timing?

The US-Israel-Iran conflict is in the “Operation Epic Fury” phase – a large-scale US air campaign targeting Iranian missile and nuclear infrastructure. After the US and Israel attacked ballistic missile depots and uranium enrichment plants, Iran declared “Operation True Promise 4” – a full-scale retaliation.

The Diego Garcia base is located approximately 4,000 km from Iran, far exceeding Tehran’s self-proclaimed missile range limit (2,000 km). The USS Eisenhower was then leading a US naval force supporting air strikes and blocking Iranian sea lanes.

→ Clear dual objectives:

Strategic: To force the US to allocate defensive resources to both fixed bases and mobile fleets.

Psychological: To demonstrate Iran’s ability to strike both long-range and close-range simultaneously.

2. Analysis of Phase 1: Ballistic Missile Attack on Diego Garcia
Iran fired two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) – identified by US intelligence as either upgraded Shahab-3s or a new version based on Simorgh space-based missile technology.

Missile 1: Failed in flight.

Missile 2: SH๏τ down by a US destroyer (Arleigh Burke-class) using an SM-3 or SM-6 missile.

Technical ᴀssessment:

The actual range exceeded 4,000 km → Iran broke its “self-imposed limit” of 2,000 km. This raises concerns that Europe is also within range.

Low accuracy (CEP > 500 m) → insufficient to destroy a fortified target like Diego Garcia (equipped with Patriot, THAAD, and Aegis radar systems at sea).

However, this is the first time Iran has used IRBMs outside the Middle East, demonstrating their mastery of re-entry technology and inertial guidance + GPS systems.

US-UK Reaction:
The Diego Garcia base remains operational. No casualties. He called it a “reckless act,” while the US considered it a “strategic failure by Iran.”
