Eddington has set its sights on a streaming release date following a divisive theatrical run earlier this year. Directed by Ari Aster (Hereditary), the A24 neo-Western stars Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix as a small-town sheriff and mayor, respectively, as an election sets them at odds in May 2020.
Following the film’s theatrical bow on July 18, HBO now announces that Eddington will arrive on HBO Max on Friday, November 14, in the U.S. It will subsequently air on HBO linear on Saturday, November 15, at 8 p.m. E.T. This streaming release comes about three months after the film landed on VOD in mid-August.
Also starring Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, and Michael Ward, among others, the critical response to Eddington was a mixed bag. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a lukewarm 69% critics’ score and a similar 65% Popcornmeter score.
In his Eddington review for ScreenRant, Graeme Guttmann awards the film a score of six out of 10, praising the way in which the film captures the uncertainty and hostility that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, even if it sometimes doesn’t explore its themes deeply enough. Guttmann writes:
At times, it can be bitterly hysterical, with Aster, who also wrote the film, further flexing his comedic muscles after his previous film with Phoenix. On the other hand, Eddington can be almost too on-the-nose, knicking the surface of complex issues but pulling the blade away before it can really draw blood.
Due to the ways in which Eddington explored conspiracy theories and political issues, it did become something of a lightning rod, with viewers on both ends of the political spectrum taking issue with certain narrative and stylistic choices. This debate played out mostly on social media.
This divisive critical response is reflected in the A24 film’s box office. Eddington is estimated to feature a budget around $25 million, but it grossed only $13 million worldwide at the box office. This total makes it the second lowest-grossing movie of Aster’s career, with Beau is Afraid (2023), grossing only $12.3 million.
The film arrived in the midst of a big year for Pascal, who continues to be a major presence on the big and small screen. Aster’s movie arrived after the premieres of The Last of Us season 2 and Materialists (2025) but before the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). Pascal will reprise his role as Reed Richards next year for the MCU’s Avengers: Doomsday.
For Phoenix, Eddington marks his feature film follow-up to last year’s controversial Joker: Folie à Deux, which was a critical and commercial failure. This DC film itself followed Napoleon in 2023, which was also divisive. It’s not clear what Phoenix’s next project will be.
Eddington‘s poor performance at the box office means strong viewership on VOD and streaming is unlikely to move the needle regarding its overall reception. Still, the upcoming release on HBO Max means the film is about to be seen by many more people, which could reignite the social media debate surrounding the movie.
