James Gunn’s recent Wonder Woman post is a great sign for the future of Diana Prince in the DC Universe. The new DCU, created by Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, is still in its fledgling stages, with only one theatrical release under its belt: this summer’s Superman. However, there is plenty of excitement about what’s to come.
In January 2023, Gunn and Safran rolled out a tentative DCU slate that included movies for Batman and Swamp Thing alongside TV shows about the Green Lanterns and the Amazons from Wonder Woman’s home of Themiscyra. At the time, though, the executives said their slate would be fluid and dependent on what projects were ready to move forward, which we’ve seen to be the case in the years since.
While the Lanterns TV show is gearing up for a 2026 release, followed by Supergirl next summer, there are many projects that have been stuck in development, while new ones have been announced. The Themiscyra series hasn’t moved forward, but Gunn did confirm a Wonder Woman movie is in the works earlier this year. Now, after his recent post, there’s even more hope for Wonder Woman’s DCU future.
James Gunn Honors Wonder Woman’s Comic Anniversary
On Threads, Gunn posted about Wonder Woman’s comic legacy in honor of the superhero’s debut appearance in All Star Comics #8 on Oct. 21, 1941. Like other DC characters before Diana Prince, Gunn paired his post with an image from the comics.

About Wonder Woman, Gunn wrote, “Over her lifetime she’s married a bird-man from another planet, shattered the moon, been turned into a gorilla, been a UN Ambᴀssador, and so so much more. That’s living!! Happy anniversary to the great Amazonian warrior, Wonder Woman!”
Why James Gunn’s Wonder Woman Post Is Significant For Her Movie Future
While the post may seem like little more than celebrating a comics anniversary, it should be noted that Gunn tends to do these anniversary posts about characters who are confirmed to be included in the DCU. The last one was for Hall Jordan, who will be played by Kyle Chandler in Lanterns. In 2024, Gunn used Jimmy Olsen’s anniversary to debut a first look at Skyler Gisondo in Superman.
These posts clearly can have meaning, and in the case of Wonder Woman, it’s further confirmation Gunn has plans for the character in the DCU. While there haven’t been any recent updates on the Wonder Woman movie, we know that Ana Nogueira (Supergirl) is penning the script. It’s likely that Gunn is waiting for the script to be done and polished before announcing the next step.
What that next step will be is likely to find a director, then cast Diana Prince. But again, this is all dependent on how well, and how quick, the script process goes. DC’s new Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, hasn’t seen any traction in a while, which Gunn said this summer is because the script is still being written.
So, while Gunn’s post may not be a firm update on the Wonder Woman movie in the works for the DCU, it’s a sign that it’s still being worked on and will be part of the franchise’s upcoming slate. Hopefully, a proper update will arrive sooner rather than later.
