Wicked: For Good is set to be released next month and one character’s voice has remained a mystery.

It has been revealed actor Colman Domingo is the voice of the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming Wicked adaptation. The reveal was made on the official Wicked Instagram page. In the video, there is a stuffed lion and Domingo reveals himself and states, “See you in Oz!” The announcement comes after many speculated on several actors who could potentially fit the bill, including James Corden.

Wicked: For Good is the final chapter in director John M. Chu’s movie adaptation. It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The two characters must come head to head as they face a brutal crossroads between friendship and duty. The movie is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novels and the hit Broadway play Wicked.

Many will not be surprised by the news, as the director teased that the Cowardly Lion casting would be a major star, stating, “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.” The Cowardly Lion was a main character in the original movie adaptation The Wizard of Oz (1939) and is seen in 2024’s Wicked as a young cub.

Elphaba and Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey) save the cub after Dr. Dillamond was arrested, and a new professor brings a caged animal to class and states it’s so the lion will never learn to speak. Enraged, Elphaba uses her powers to make everyone fall asleep, leaving time for her and Fiyero to set the cub free in the forest.

Wicked: For Good will see the young cub fully grown and blame Elphaba for his current predicament, so he accompanies Dorothy to the Emerald City. There will be overlapping timelines between the movie Wicked and The Wizard of Oz, but it has been stated Dorothy’s role will not be featured heavily.

Wicked (2024) earned over $756 million worldwide at the box office and currently has a rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Wicked: For Good is easily one of the main films people are looking forward to watching this year. The sequel has an impressive budget of $165 million and is expected to more than make up for it.

Domingo is a celebrated actor and playwright with more than enough accolades to handle this new role. He has received nominations for two Academy Awards and two Tony Awards and is known for Sing Sing, Fear the Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, and Broadway shows including Chicago and The Scottsboro Boys.
