With award season right around the corner, Sinners is set to return to IMAX theaters with a perfect re-release. Ryan Coogler’s vampiric horror became an overnight sensation earlier this year for its original story, its genre-blending and thematic elements, and strong filmmaking direction.
Even though Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max, the horror movie is scheduled for a theatrical re-release. Coogler’s magnum opus is set to return to select IMAX theaters between October 30 and November 5. This is after IMAX quietly released the tickets on their website, which are now available to purchase.
Despite reports leading up to its release, Sinners debuted with $48 million at the domestic box office during its original April release. While some outlets presented a doomsday story regarding the movie’s box office, it was eventually hit with backlash, especially given that it was being met with near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences.
Coogler’s original movie quickly became a sleeper hit thanks to word-of-mouth, while securing a 96% Tomatometer and 97% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s given that Sinners’ box office only had a 6% second weekend drop, which became the 31st smallest drop in history. It has since earned over $366 million globally against a reported $90 million to $100 million budget.
One of the key reasons for the strong box office is its IMAX release. IMAX screenings for Sinners were quickly selling out to the point where it had a re-release back in May. Now, the critically acclaimed horror will return to theaters at the most opportune time, where it is now re-releasing on Halloween. Several more 2025 movies are following suit to this trend, including KPop Demon Hunters and Weapons.
The triumph for Sinners doesn’t end with its box office success. Following its release, there have been heavy conversations about Sinners‘ award potential. That only makes the re-release well-timed since award season is right around the corner. This includes award consideration for Coogler for Best Director, Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance for Best Actor, and numerous other technical categories.
While it may be too soon to decide whether Sinners is an Oscar frontrunner, given the tough compeтιтion like One Battle After Another and Hamnet, it doesn’t take away the fact that audiences have another opportunity to see the horror masterpiece on the big screens once again in IMAX theaters. Plus, it couldn’t return at a better time than Halloween.
