Mickey Mouse Slasher Sequel Confirmed With Another Iconic Character Set To Appear

A sequel to the slasher Steamboat Willie movie Screamboat has been announced, and the film will feature an iconic character from the Mickey Mouse universe. Mickey is one of the most famous animated cartoon characters ever, having made his debut way back in 1928 via Steamboat Willie.

The classic short film became a public domain property in 2024, sparking multiple horror film adaptations.

Variety reported that Screamboat is officially getting a second film, which will be called Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Minnie Mouse, one of the most iconic Mickey Mouse characters, will make her debut in the horror franchise. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but production will start in 2026.

The film’s director, Steven LaMorte, who is back for the sequel, released a statement in which he revealed how “thrilled” he is to make this exciting announcement. He had “so much fun” creating a horror version of Steamboat Willie for the first film, and he can’t wait to return to that world for “even more miniature murder and mayhem.”

I’m thrilled to announce the sequel to our bloody horror comedy. We had so much fun bringing these iconic characters to life with a bloody twist, and I look forward to returning to the world of Screamboat to create even more miniature murder and mayhem.

Screamboat ended with Willie reconnecting with his love interest, who is obviously Minnie. As a result, Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays ᴅᴇᴀᴅ will continue after that cliffhanger. LaMorte and the other filmmakers teased that, alongside the introduction of Minnie, the sequel would include “even more outrageous set pieces and gruesome comedy.”

[Screamboat 2: Nothing Stays ᴅᴇᴀᴅ] will continue the story and expand on the shocking cliffhanger ending of the first film — which teased the arrival of another murderous public-domain icon: Minnie. Fans can expect the sequel to build on that legacy with even more outrageous set pieces and gruesome comedy.

Upon its April 2, 2025, release in movie theaters, Screamboat was considered a dud with critics, who gave the film a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The horror remake earned just $393,011 at the box office on a reported $2 million budget, but it only had a limited run in theaters.

The movie is currently streaming on Peacock, so the movie’s production company is making more money now through a licensing deal, as well as money earned through customers buying and renting the film digitally and on DVD/Blu-ray.

Screamboat continues a trend in recent years in which classic animated movie characters are featured in horror/slasher films after they enter the public domain. The Mouse Trap and I Heart Willie are among the horror films that reimagine the character of Mickey Mouse.

Other horror remakes based on classic characters include Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Piglet, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, The Ugly Stepsister, Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, The Mean One, Bambi: The Reckoning, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Popeye’s Revenge, The Death of Snow White and many more.

As long as fans keep watching and streaming these horror remakes, then there will be many more in the years to come, alongside the just-announced Screamboat sequel.
