Black Phone 2 Ends Blumhouse’s Box Office Slump In Just 3 Days

Black Phone 2 has taken just one weekend to smash a box office record. 2025’s Black Phone 2 is a sequel to the hit 2022 Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone and features the return of director and co-writer Scott Derrickson, co-writer C. Robert Cargill, and stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Ethan Hawke, among others.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Black Phone 2 is projected to end its first weekend in theaters by hitting a 3-day total of $42 million at the global box office. This total comprises $26.5 million from domestic theaters and an additional $15.5 million from international markets.

In doing so, Black Phone 2 has instantly become the highest-grossing Blumhouse movie of the year. It has already surpᴀssed the entire worldwide run of the previous record-holder, which was the killer doll sequel M3GAN 2.0 ($39.1 million).

The other wide release Blumhouse movies of 2025 were the Universal monster remake Wolf Man ($34.1 million), the first date thriller Drop ($28.7 million), and the psychological horror тιтle The Woman in the Yard ($23.3 million).

The only major Blumhouse production that is not eligible for this comparison is the Matthew McConaughey survival thriller The Lost Bus, which only had a limited theatrical release before debuting directly to streaming on Apple TV+, where it sH๏τ to No. 1 on the streamer’s proprietary chart the day it premiered.

Black Phone 2 is on track to become a solid success in theaters, as its domestic opening weekend has surpᴀssed that of the original movie, which eventually grossed $161.4 million against a reported budget of just $18 million. However, the fact that it is already Blumhouse’s biggest movie of the year so far speaks more to the challenges that the company has faced in 2025.

While Black Phone 2‘s reported budget of $30 million could place its break-even point as high as $75 million, that should be an easy milestone for it to clear. This would make it the first Blumhouse movie of 2025 to conclusively break even in theaters, though some have likely crossed that line with VOD, streaming, and physical media revenue.

While Black Phone 2 is currently an outlier, it could be a portent of things to come. Blumhouse’s final major wide release of 2025 is the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, a sequel to their $291.5 million smash hit video game adaptation. Together, the two sequels could resurrect the company’s prospects as the year draws to a close.
