Hit Fantasy Movie Star Suits Up As The Nightwing Of James Gunn’s DCU In New DC Art

Mason Thames becomes the Nightwing of the new DC Universe in epic art. Thames recently starred in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon adaptation as Hiccup. The movie became a worldwide hit, grossing $636 million. At only 18, the actor could be one of the core stars of the DCU, becoming part of the franchise for James Gunn’s 10-year DCU plan and beyond.

So far, only one version of Robin is confirmed to appear in the DCU. That would be Damian Wayne, who will debut in Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie. However, given that Damian is the Dark Knight’s fourth male Robin, Dick Grayson, the first, could very well be in the DCU as Nightwing.

On Instagram, @spdrmnkyxxiii imagined what Mason Thames could look like as the DCU’s Nightwing.

The DC fan art sees the How to Train Your Dragon star don an updated version of Nightwing’s comic book suit. The art features way more black than most classic Nightwing suits, with a bigger “V” symbol in blue on the hero’s chest instead of the leaner, more classic design. Nightwing would make sense for the DCU’s upcoming movies.

Could Mason Thames Play Nightwing In The DCU?

While Dick Grayson has yet to be confirmed for the DCU, his presence in Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie is likely. After all, James Gunn has teased Nightwing on social media multiple times. In addition to that and the comics’ Robin timeline, DC has already confirmed that more Bat-Family characters will appear in the film beyond Batman and Damian Wayne.

Given his role as Bruce’s first Robin, Dick Grayson is one of the characters who just have to appear if the wider Bat-Family is involved. When it comes to Mason Thames’ chances of playing Nightwing, the fact that the actor is a rising star who is only 18 bodes well for a possible DCU future. He has been a part of a couple of hits.

Those include the live-action How to Train Your Dragon and the horror movie The Black Phone, which has a sequel, Black Phone 2, now in theaters. Recently, Thames told @therealsupes that he would love to play Dick Grayson in the DCU. According to the actor, playing Robin, specifically Dick, would be a dream role for him, saying, “He was everything to me [growing up].”

Our Take On Mason Thames’ Chances Of Playing Nightwing In The DCU

Given his age, the actor’s status as a rising star, and Mason Thames’ love for Dick Grayson, I would say the actor’s chances of taking on the role are looking good. Thames would be at an age that allows the DCU to explore both Dick’s time as Nightwing in the present while also opening the door for realistic flashbacks of his time as Robin.

At the very least, Thames should be able to secure an audition for Nightwing. When that might happen is the real question, as Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie is still being written, so no firm timeline can be projected. That said, Mason Thames has the necessary charisma to pull off one of DC’s most beloved and inspirational heroes.
