Nicholas Hoult Teases How Superman 2 Will Expand The DCU’s Lex Luthor

The DC Universe is just getting started with its Superman franchise, as Man of Tomorrow will bring Krypton’s last son and Lex Luthor together, but this time as allies. Only a few months after the release of the Superman movie in theaters, a sequel is happening at DC Studios with David Corenswet’s тιтular hero.

In a new interview with GQ, Nicholas Hoult, who portrayed the iconic supervillain in the 2025 installment, confirmed that he “haven’t read it yet, but hopefully will soon, so I can’t say anything more than that.” However, the British star stressed that there is more to tackle with his Lex in the DCU sequel.

The former X-Men actor explained, “But just upon playing the character for the first time in that story, through my research and prep, I feel like there’s a lot more for me to explore and for us to explore.” With filming set to start in 2026, Hoult added, “So I’m excited that we are getting the chance to go back and do that.”

The Superman movie ending saw Lex getting sent to Belle Reve, after his actions are exposed through The Daily Planet. However, Hoult reprised the role in Peacemaker season 2, episode 6, where he cut a deal with Rick Flag Sr. that slowly sets up his arc in the 2027 follow-up.

Principal pH๏τography on the Man of Tomorrow movie is set to begin sometime in April 2026, with Hoult and Corenswet set to star alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. Other DCU players are expected to return from previous projects, but specific actors have yet to be confirmed.

According to Gunn, “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” After sharing the script page on September 22, 2025, the H๏τ theory is that Brainiac will be the main antagonist.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly from September 26, 2025, Gunn was asked if Brainiac would indeed be the primary villain for the sequel. However, the DC Studios co-CEO kept it cryptic, saying, “But I think we’ll hold off from what exactly is happening.”

When Gunn and DC Studios announced the sequel on September 3, 2025, comic artwork of Lex in his Lexosuit was shared, alluding to him donning the armor in the upcoming film alongside Corenswet’s Superman. Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
