Why The MCU Won’t Have A Solo Hulk Movie Addressed By Mark Ruffalo

While most of the major Avengers have had their own Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk has yet to get one. As the MCU timeline has reached Phase 6, more heroes have joined the franchise, with many of them getting their own solo projects.

In a new interview with GQ, the superhero veteran was asked if he ever wished he had a Hulk film. Having joined the franchise in 2012 through The Avengers, he stated, “Yeah, I’d love to have a solo Hulk movie. I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel; it’s a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly.”

Ruffalo stressed that “We keep talking about it, what it would be.” However, he also added that “There’s been so many Hulk movies already, it’s like, does anyone really want another one?” The last installment for the iconic Marvel hero was in 2008 through The Incredible Hulk, with Ed Norton.

Nevertheless, Ruffalo would still jump at the chance to headline one if it ever happens, stating, “But I’d love one, and I do think the audiences would be into it if we could crack the nut of it.” Despite not having a solo film, the character has had a great deal of exposure in the franchise.

With the Hulk film distribution rights at Universal, that is why Ruffalo’s character has been used more as a supporting character across various MCU projects over the last couple of phases. Bruce has, to this point, appeared in all the Avengers movies, including Avengers: Endgame.

The last time Ruffalo appeared in a live-action property for Marvel Studios was in 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law TV show, starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, Bruce’s cousin. However, Ruffalo is reportedly making his way back to the big screen in 2026.

On August 1, 2025, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Ruffalo’s Hulk had joined the Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast, featuring Tom Holland’s тιтular hero back for the first time since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Phase 6 installment will also feature Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, with Frank Castle finally making his Marvel Studios film debut.

It’s unclear right now if Hulk is even part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, as Ruffalo was not one of the actors announced during the surprise live-stream on March 26, 2025. However, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there will be at least one MCU film that audience members can catch Hulk in 2026.
