Wicked: For Good Will Feature Baby Glinda Flashback

Wicked: For Good director Jon M. Chu teases that the sequel will feature a never-before-seen flashback of baby Glinda. This is a change from the Wicked stage musical, where there are no such flashbacks. The first movie and the Broadway musical do feature flashbacks to baby Elphaba, and the movie also shows a pivotal moment during Elphaba and Nessarose’s childhood.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Chu reveals that he insisted on filming the baby Glinda flashback scene that had been cut earlier in production. The flashback offers insight into Glinda’s childhood, along with how it shaped her idenтιтy before coming to Shiz, and the choices she makes in Wicked: For Good. Check out Chu’s comments below:

We had that scene in the script, and I knew we should have kept it, but we didn’t shoot it at the time because we had a lot of other pressures.

Producer Marc Platt promised Chu that the scene would be added in later if they felt it was necessary for the movie. This is in addition to another Glinda change that Chu teases, which is that “I just needed to refine” her final speech to the Munchkins that she delivers from her bubble.

A brand-new look at Glinda’s younger self is a change to Wicked: For Good‘s story that builds off the first movie’s success. The flashbacks to Elphaba’s childhood help explain her idenтιтy and the pivotal choices she makes during her journey. This culminates with the emotional moment of Elphaba seeing a reflection of her younger self during the “Defying Gravity” scene.

For Good will seemingly try to replicate this narrative approach with Glinda. This will add more context to why Glinda acts the way she does in the first movie while also informing the choices she makes in the sequel. It will also be a new experience for longtime fans of the stage musical and those seeing the second half of the story for the first time.

The flashback to Glinda’s childhood, her refined speech to the Munchkins, and Glinda’s new song “The Girl in the Bubble” further increase the character’s role after Ariana Grande-Butera’s critically acclaimed and Academy Award-nominated performance. This makes For Good not just Elphaba’s story, but rather the story of Elphaba and Glinda.

As was the case with some of the changes in the first Wicked movie, the update to Glinda’s story may prove divisive, particularly among diehard fans of the Broadway musical. With Chu ensuring that the baby Glinda flashback scene was included after it was previously cut from the script, though, it is poised to be a compelling addition to Wicked: For Good.

Wicked: For Good comes to theaters on November 21.
