A reboot of Sylvester Stallone‘s action classic finally secures a release date. While the action star has invested in his television show, Tulsa King, several of his classics have been adapted into remakes, reimaginings, or biopics, including the making of his sports movie, I Play Rocky.
One of his action classics that is being rebooted is Cliffhanger. The upcoming movie will star Lily James, who portrays the female counterpart of Stallone’s character in the original 1993 movie. After Row K secured the distribution rights to the reboot, it was revealed that the Cliffhanger movie would be released on August 28, 2026.
The reboot is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently made Netflix’s Carry-On, and the cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Nell Tiger Free, and Franz Rogowski. Brosnan and James will play a father and daughter operating a luxury chalet in the Dolomites. When a trip goes sour with a billionaire’s son, they become the target of a group of kidnappers. Feeling guilty about the climbing accident, James’ heroine escapes and puts her skills to the test to save her loved ones.
After collecting $255 million at the global box office, plans to expand on the Cliffhanger movie date back to 1994, when there were hopes for a sequel. However, the film faced development hell for nearly two decades, and those plans shifted to reimagining the action classic. In May 2023, the project was moving forward with the idea of making a legacy sequel, with Stallone’s involvement. However, after Stallone was no longer attached, the movie was reworked to become a modern-day reboot.
While the film was completed in late 2024, its journey to hitting the big screen was a slow process, with Row K only securing the distribution in late September of this year. However, it was an eight-figure deal that includes a wide release spanning 3,000 domestic screens.
There is certainly a lot of hype for the reboot, as James describes it as a “cool reimagining” and that the story “keeps all the gripping glory of the original.“ ᴅᴇᴀᴅline also reported that a sequel is already in development.
The Cliffhanger reboot will be released on the same day as Coyote vs Acme, a Warner Bros. film that was originally shelved before being rescued by Ketchup Entertainment. Currently, there are no trailers or first images for the movie aside from a poster image of James climbing a mountain. Nevertheless, the reboot has a lot of promise, especially now that a release date is locked.
