100 Nights of Hero, the upcoming fantasy movie starring Charli XCX among others, is off to a strong start. Based on Isabel Greenberg’s popular graphic novel of the same name, 100 Nights of Hero takes place in a medieval setting and follows an unhappy noblewoman whose fidelity is tested by her husband when he challenges a visiting friend to seduce her.
The movie adaptation, distributed by the Independent Film Company, is written and directed by Julia Jackman and also stars Maika Monroe, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Galitzine, Amir El-Masry, and Felicity Jones. 100 Nights of Hero is led by the wife, Cherry (Monroe), and her devoted maid Hero (Corrin), as Hero plans to distract Manfred (Galitzine) from Cherry by telling him an entrancing story every night.
Potential audiences who are fans of the source material, any one of the stars, or the genre that were hoping this would be a solid entry have seemingly gotten their wish: 100 Nights of Hero has received its debut Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%, aggregated from 10 reviews. Notably, it took some time for the site to get enough reviews to produce this score.
100 Nights of Hero had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 6, but only reached 10 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes midway through October. However, reviews praise its unique genre, style, and the lead performances as a vehicle for a lighthearted and maybe not too deep, but enjoyable feminist and queer spin on a fairy tale.
100 Nights of Hero‘s teaser trailer promised a quirky, fantastical atmosphere, and it appears to have delivered. The movie didn’t receive as much attention as it debuted alongside multiple major Oscar contenders at the Venice Film Festival, which will likely also be a challenge for it at the box office. 100 Nights of Hero will arrive in theaters on December 5.
However, movies that are aiming to secure at least a few nominations, such as Marty Supreme and The Testament of Ann Lee, are both slated to come out on Christmas Day. In this sense, 100 Nights of Hero has a good premiere date as it can present itself as a fun, earlier holiday release, which definitely stands apart from typical holiday rom-coms and more dramatic Oscar bait.
100 Nights of Hero‘s budget is not publicly known, but ᴀssuming it is on the lower side, it is aiming for a not record-breaking but decent box office run, which is achievable. 100 Nights of Hero has the potential to find a dedicated audience that admires the film for the performances from A-listers who took a chance on it, and its incomparable atmosphere.
