Frankenstein Star Jacob Elordi’s Transformation Required Over 40 Prosthetics

Netflix’s upcoming gothic horror Frankenstein stars Jacob Elordi, and his transformation into The Creature has left many speechless and required over 40 prosthetics to perfect.

Legendary director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the novel by Mary Shelley is set to release on Netflix on November 7. Elordi stars as the Creature, and, according to Variety, required 42 prosthetics to transform the actor into del Toro’s vision.

To accompany the film’s release, an immersive experience called Frankenstein: Crafting a Tale Eternal is free and open to the public until November 9, giving fans a look at what went on behind the scenes. The exhibit showcases production designer Tamara Deverell and prosthetics artist Mike Hill’s work, as well as Kate Hawley’s costumes from the movie.

Frankenstein follows the iconic tale of an egotistical scientist, Victor Frankenstein, as he is determined to create life and creates a monstrous creature in an experiment, which ultimately leads to their undoing. Netflix’s adaptation stars Oscar Issac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Ralph Ineson.

Much to the amazement of visitors, the sets were all handmade, including a ship over 130 feet named The Horisont.

The Creature’s design was intended to feel like it belonged in the 1800s and not a modern-day rendition. Elordi spent 10 hours in the makeup chair to transform into The Creature, and Hill intentionally created him to show the little details Victor Frankenstein would’ve made when creating his experiment.

“There are a few patchworks, a few mistakes, and this is what this body’s showing. We created this body. So you can literally see him bolting the leg together and extending this man to make him taller than an average human.

What we decided is, if you were going to create a man, you wouldn’t go and get 10 bodies and someone together. What’s the point? You’d get the very best body you can get.”

Elordi had full-body prosthetics and used 42 pieces to ᴀssemble the final vision, with 14 pieces alone on his head and neck. Another impressive detail is how much time and effort it took to make del Toro’s vision come to life. Due to filming, the 10-hour prosthetics were applied 50 times while filming, requiring eight people to apply.

Early reviews are coming in for del Toro’s new movie, and it already has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating of 83%. Despite this being del Toro’s last time directing for a while, many fans are excited to see what the horror legend can do with a story that has already had plenty of adaptations.
