It has been more than two years since The Flash movie from Warner Bros. gave Barry Allen his cinematic solo adventure in the DCEU franchise. While the universe that began with 2013’s Man of Steel came to an end in 2023, the Scarlet Speedster’s installment ended up as one of the bigger failures of that continuity.
However, despite its box office results and negative reception, The Flash director Andy Muschietti still stands by his film, as the filmmaker discussed the DC entry with The Playlist in a new interview. With Miller’s public controversies also taking a lot of attention leading up to the film’s release, Muschietti made it clear that they didn’t let that be a distraction.
“No, we just moved on and understood that sometimes there’s a headwind and a project that you dedicated a lot of work to,” he stated, and also addressed his thoughts on the reactions to The Flash. “And we’re very proud of it. I think it’s a good movie,” he added while also commenting on “a lot of people did not see it.”
Muschietti continued, “But you know how things are these days — people don’t see things, but they like to talk s*** about it, and they like to jump on bandwagons.” He added how “they don’t really know. People are angry for reasons that are unrelated to these things.”
However, the It director also acknowledged that Miller’s actions in real life had an impact on the project, “Of course, we had a publicity crisis with Ezra that is undeniable. And I’m not questioning that.” Regardless, he still champions The Flash movie, “But yeah, we love the movie. And actually, we really recommend it.”
Andy Muschietti: “This may seem immaterial now, but we also had so much support from the studio, really, at a point where they could have been like, you know, backing out because of all the issues we were having with publicity. And they went all in, and we all went all in. And again, we love the movie. We, you know, we gave it our blood, sweat, and tears all the way to the end. And I watched it, like a week ago, and loved it again.”
The Flash film, which also starred Michael Keaton as Batman, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, with Ben Affleck’s final appearance as his version of the Dark Knight in the DCEU movie timeline, grossed $271.4 million at the worldwide box office, based on a budget of over $200 million. However, Muschietti is not done with the DC genre.
The It: Welcome To Derry creator is set to direct The Brave and The Bold movie in James Gunn’s DC Universe, which will bring Batman into the new superhero franchise for DC Studios. However, no release date is set yet as the project is still being written.
As far as the fastest man alive in the DCU is concerned, DC Studios has no plans yet for the iconic hero in Gunn’s reboot. The Flash movie is available through streaming and home media release.
