Jim Carrey could be heading off into the future, as the actor is in talks to star in a live-action movie of the classic cartoon series The Jetsons. This would mark the first leading role – and first role in a film outside the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise – for Carrey since his retirement announcement in 2022.
Reports on October 15 revealed that Carrey is in talks to presumably play George Jetson, the patriarch of the futuristic family at the center of the classic 1960s animated series. It was also announced that Colin Trevorrow, who directed the first three Jurᴀssic World films, is in talks to helm The Jetsons, which is set up at Warner Bros.
There are no plot details available at this time, but Trevorrow and Joe Epstein are also in talks to write the script, which will most likely provide a new take on the тιтular family as they go about their lives in the year 2062.
The Jetsons were a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, the same animation studio that created The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, Dexter’s Laboratory, and The Powerpuff Girls. In addition to George Jetson, the тιтular family included his son, Elroy, daughter, Judy, and Jane, his wife. The original voice cast of the series featured George O’Hanlon, Penny Singleton, Daws Butler, and Janet Waldo.
The original series aired for 75 episodes, but there were multiple follow-ups over the years, including a crossover between The Jetsons and The Flintstones, as well as a 1990 animated movie, Jetsons: The Movie.
A previous attempt to make a live-action Jetsons movie from Adam Shankman never came to fruition. There were also more recent attempts to make a CGI or animated movies based on the classic cartoon, including one from Robert Rodriguez and another by Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon.
While Carrey teased that he was going to retire from acting in 2022 while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey was back reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in the video game adaptation two years later with 2024’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, The Jetsons would mark Carrey’s first role in a non-Sonic movie since 2016.
Carrey, of course, has a plethora of notable performances over his career. From his 1994 breakout with the triple play of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask (recently a streaming hit on Netflix) to acclaimed dramatic turns in The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the actor has been one of the biggest movie stars of the last 30-plus years.
Warner Bros. has not confirmed a live-action Jetsons movie or Carrey’s potential involvement as of writing.
