Released by New Line Cinema, The Mask opened in theaters on July 29, 1994, and grossed $352 million at the worldwide box office. Based on the creation from Dark Horse Comics, The Mask was one of the few non-DC or Marvel films that got made in the 1990s, back when the superhero and comic book film genre was still limited.

Directed by Chuck Russell, based on a script from Mike Werb, while Michael Fallon and Mark Verheiden worked on the story, The Mask centers on Stanley Ipkis, whose life is turned around when a magical wooden mask comes into his possession. It transforms him into the green and loud тιтular protagonist.

As The Mask became a box office hit, a sequel was initially planned to proceed with Carrey, but the star ended up departing the project. Instead, Son of the Mask became a loose sequel, featuring Jamie Kennedy, which became a commercial bomb, grossing only $59.9 million worldwide, and was slammed by critics.

While another installment with Carrey’s character isn’t officially happening, the star revealed to ComicBook on December 11, 2024, that he is open to reprising the role. It all depends on the concept, as he said, “It has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.”

Cameron Diaz, who played Tina Carlyle in the first movie, shared with Variety on January 18, 2025, that she would consider coming back. “If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” she stated about appearing in a sequel.

In the current climate of comic book adaptations, a follow-up to the 1994 film could potentially tackle the darker stories from the source material. If The Mask continues to have success through streaming, perhaps that will be the push needed to get another sequel made.
