The confirmation of The Long Walk‘s march to home video screens follows a generally positive reception during its theatrical run. On Rotten Tomatoes, the King movie enjoys a strong 87% critics’ score, with the audience-driven Popcornmeter not far behind at 85%.
In his The Long Walk review for ScreenRant, Todd Gilchrist awards the film a seven out of 10, praising Mollner’s script and the film’s impressive cinematography and visuals. In particular, Gilchrist highlights the performances from Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson as major strengths:
But Jonsson is working on a level that almost no one else in this film is, and further confirms, after his breakout role in Alien: Romulus, that he is one of the most promising young actors working today. It’s the nuance and complexity he lends to McVries that forms the film’s unexpected soul, even right next to Hoffman as its heart. Together, they’re dynamite — absolutely mesmerizing, and make the whole thing worth watching.
In terms of box office, The Long Walk has been a more modest success. The dystopian thriller, which also stars Mark Hamill, has grossed $50 million worldwide. Given the reported budget of $20 million, this figure is exactly where the movie’s break-even point might be. Considering the film remains in theaters, it should end its run as a successful venture for Lionsgate.
The film’s positive reception bodes well for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, which arrives next month and marks the third King adaptation of 2025. Wright’s film, however, is set to be bigger than both The Monkey from earlier this year and The Long Walk, with Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, and Colman Domingo, among others, anchoring a film with a seemingly larger budget.
Though it remains to be seen just how big of a release The Running Man will be, The Long Walk isn’t out of road just yet, and its positive reception could help drive it to further success in theaters and on home viewing platforms. With most audiences enjoying the experience, the film could enjoy a healthy second life in the months to come due to positive word of mouth.
