Netflix’s action franchise Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth has proven quite popular, with both the 2020 original and 2023 sequel both appearing in the Netflix Top 10 most-watched original movies of all time at one point. That popularity is leading to a spin-off of the action franchise, set to star a veteran of another Netflix megahit.
Multiple reports share that Netflix is moving forward with Extraction: Taigo, a Korean spin-off that will star Squid Game‘s Lee Jin-wook and Train to Busan star Ma Dong-seok. Lee Sang-yong, who directed The Roundup and The Roundup: No Way Out with Ma Dong-seok, is directing Extraction: Taigo off of a script from Cah Woo Jin.
Netflix has not made an official announcement about the film as of yet, but it appears that Extraction: Taigo is going to begin production sometime in the month of October and run through mid-January 2026. No information regarding the film’s potential release date has been shared at this time.
Plot details are also scarce, but what has surfaced says that the film will follow a mercenary who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue a kidnapped colleague. According to reports, Ma Dong-seok is in line to play the mercenary.
This is the latest expansion of the Extraction franchise. Hemsworth is confirmed to return to the role of Tyler Rake for a third film, with director Sam Hargrave announcing that production is expected to start in 2026. Netflix is also developing a TV series based on the Extraction films тιтled Mercenary and set to star Lupin star Omar Sy.
Lee Jin-wook is best known for playing Park Gyeong-seok in Squid Game Season 2 and 3, but he has starred in a number of other Korean TV series that have streamed on Netflix, including Beyond the Bar, which became an instant global hit on the streamer, and Sweet Home.
Ma Dong-seok also has a Netflix connection, starring in the Netflix original Korean film Badland Hunters. He has a number of other notable credits though, including starring in the MCU’s Eternals as Gigamesh, appearing in the Disney+ original series Twelve, and appearing in the popular video game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
Extraction has become Netflix’s main action franchise. While neither of the first two films are in the Netflix 10 top of most watched movies all time, of the action movies that are – Red Notice, Carry-On, The Adam Project, Back in Action, The Gray Man, and Damsel – none have made more than one film. Extraction, meanwhile, has proven to be a model Netflix continues to replicate.
