Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Comments Nail Exactly Why She Has To Return

Elizabeth Olsen’s latest comments about Scarlet Witch returning in the MCU reiterate why fans should remain hopeful about the chances of the character reappearing in the franchise. Wanda Maximoff did have a fair run in the MCU timeline appearances-wise, but her overarching story often only seemed to tease what was possible for the Scarlet Witch.

WandaVision suggested things could be changing in this regard, but the opposite proved to be true in some ways, with the Scarlet Witch’s story seemingly coming to an end only one year later. That said, much like Elizabeth Olsen herself has stated, there are plenty of reasons for fans to not give up hope when it comes to Wanda’s return.

Elizabeth Olsen’s New Scarlet Witch Comments Suggest Wanda’s Return Isn’t As Impossible As It Previously Seemed

With Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch currently being ᴅᴇᴀᴅ after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the character’s fate has seemed pretty sealed for the time being. This appeared doubly true given Olsen herself seemed to confirm Scarlet Witch’s death, and appeared to confirm her version of Scarlet Witch wouldn’t be in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars.

That said, the actor has also consistently alluded to being interested in reprising her role in the MCU, leaving some embers of hope still burning despite how much it’s been consistently reiterated that the MCU’s main Scarlet Witch is ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, and that her story may well have ended there.

Perhaps the most crucial of these statements is the newest, as Elizabeth Olsen’s latest comments about the Scarlet Witch’s return saw her mention:

It is something that I love, and it’s something I always want to return to. I think the thing that’s been so special about the last five years is I’ve gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I’d love to do that I think fans also want to.

Not only is this promising in that it demonstrates Olsen is still excited about the prospect of returning as the Scarlet Witch, it also hits on why so many want to see Wanda return – because the vast majority of her best and most interesting comic storylines haven’t been touched upon in the MCU yet.

As it stands, the franchise’s trajectory suggests the future could absolutely do so.

Scarlet Witch’s Return Would Make A Lot Of Sense For The MCU’s Upcoming Releases

Not only are Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars set to bring about a reboot for the MCU – which offers the chance to reset endings like Scarlet Witch’s own – Marvel’s mutant characters are also about to take the center stage going forward, which expands the potential of Wanda’s stories in the franchise immeasurably.

When Wanda was first introduced in the MCU, her Marvel comic story and origins had to be mᴀssively changed, since mutant characters weren’t on the table for the franchise at this time – complicating Wanda’s trajectory, and meaning her arc couldn’t draw as closely from the source material, wherein her being a mutant is naturally a key detail.

As such, even if the Scarlet Witch doesn’t manage to appear in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, the layout for the franchise certainly suggests there’s not only a viable way to justify Wanda’s return after these releases, but also a strong reason to bring her back despite her having her own previous arc in the MCU.
