Rey and Leia’s Epic Quest Will Reveal 4 Unexpected Star Wars Secrets

Lucasfilm has announced a surprising new Star Wars novel, Legacy by best-selling author Madeleine Roux. Set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, this will be the first ever original novel to really get inside Rey Skywalker’s mind. Lucasfilm has been slow to explore the sequel era in tie-in books, but all that is gradually changing.

Legacy is a Star Wars novel with unique promise. Releasing July 28, 2026, it’s the second Star Wars story to explore Rey’s training (the first, Cavan Scott’s The Jaws of Jakku, is an audiobook that released just this week). Not only will it finally shine a light on an unexplored part of the Skywalker saga, it will also reveal some surprising secrets of the Jedi.

What Was Leia Like As A Jedi Master?

Until The Last Jedi, we’d generally ᴀssumed Leia had never really trained in the ways of the Force. Then, surprisingly, she demonstrated the power of the Chosen One bloodline in a scene where she somehow survived being blasted into space. Fast-forward to The Rise of Skywalker, and a flashback revealed Leia trained under Luke – and became Rey’s mentor.

But what was Leia like as a Master? How much Jedi teaching had she absorbed, and what lessons did she pᴀss on? Most curious of all, how did Rey and Leia become close, given the confusion both felt over their different relationships with Kylo Ren? According to Roux, that last question will be the focus of the novel. As she explained in an interview with StarWars.com:

“You need to get these two people to like each other and be almost like mother daughter or mentor and apprentice. But this is the mother of the guy who [Rey] just had an incredibly messy situation with. It’s really fraught. It’s really confusing. And just the thought of being with that person’s mother is pretty intense. There is a lot of uncertainty.”

How Did Rey Learn To Repair The Skywalker Lightsaber?

The Skywalker lightsaber was broken in The Last Jedi, shattered when Rey and Kylo Ren fought over the Skywalker legacy. Rey somehow learned to repair it by The Rise of Skywalker, though, discovering a power that allowed her to repair the broken kyber crystal using her own life force.

It seems that was no easy task, even with the ancient Jedi texts at hand. According to the synopsis, the books didn’t contain the secret to this technique at all; rather, they revealed that more secrets were held at an ancient Jedi Temple on the planet Tython. Leia and Rey head there on a quest that will no doubt help them understand the legacy of the Jedi.

How Does Rey’s Force Heal Power Really Work?

Rae Carson’s novelization of The Rise of Skywalker dropped a curious hint about the power Rey used to repair the kyber; it seems to be related to the Force Heal power she used in the movie (and may actually be the same ability). This power is particularly interesting, because other books have hinted Rey’s power helped redeem Kylo Ren.

Healing through the Force is a peculiar thing,” Kristin Braver’s Skywalkers: A Family At War observes. “Rey transferred her own Force energy to the wounded man at her feet; however, the interaction did more than merely mend a gaping wound. Burned flesh and damaged organs were made whole again, and even the scar on his face disappeared. For the first time in more than a decade, Ben Solo’s mind cleared.

This, of course, is the very power Anakin Skywalker sought in Revenge of the Sith – a way to save another from death. It seems the power had been lost in the mists of time, only to be eventually discovered by Rey and Leia on Tython.

What Secrets Lie On The Jedi Planet Of Tython?

The planet Tython in The Mandalorian season 2

Tython is an important planet in the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. Situated in the Deep Core, it was actually the homeworld of the Jedi Order, noted for two moons that orbited it. The moon Ashla became seen as symbolic of the light side, while its twin Bogan became an icon of the dark.

Tython made its canon debut in The Mandalorian season 2, when Din Djarin and Grogu visited there. Grogu discovered a Force vergence, which he used to draw the attention of Luke Skywalker; but it seems there were far greater secrets to be revealed. According to Legacy‘s official synopsis, Rey and Leia will discover a long-forgotten Jedi Temple.

According to the book’s official synopsis, “Rey and Leia’s nascent mentorship is put to the test when they discover the temple on Tython is filled with obscure clues to decipher and arcane trials to complete. As they work to unravel the temple’s mysteries, they encounter a group of refugees living in its shadow, hiding from a First Order officer H๏τ on the trail of two freedom fighters in their midst.

It seems Star Wars isn’t just going to be revealing more about the relationship between Rey and Leia; we’re also about to get some forgotten Jedi secrets too.
