Materialists has ascended to become a major streaming success after the Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal romantic dramedy hit theaters earlier this year. Directed by Celine Song, the film, which also stars Dakota Johnson, follows a New York City matchmaker as she struggles to choose between her ex and a seemingly perfect match.
Following the film’s streaming release in various regions globally, Materialists currently ranks as the third most popular movie on HBO Max’s worldwide rankings, per FlixPatrol. The movie comes behind The Substance (2024) and, in first place, Superman (2025). The romcom beats some other big тιтles, including The Beast Within (2024), Killer Heat (2024), and 28 Years Later (2025).
Materialists is not yet streaming on HBO Max in the U.S., but it is expected to arrive on the service this month.
Making up the rest of the worldwide top 10, HBO Max viewers are also watching The Alabama Solution (2025), Valiant One (2025), Oppenheimer (2023), and, in tenth place, Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story (2024).
Materialists‘ new podium placement in HBO Max’s daily top 10 follows a generally warm theatrical reception. Releasing on the big screen on June 13, the A24-distributed film was made on an estimated production budget of $20 million, making its $100 million global haul a successful outcome.
Materialists reviews from critics praised the film’s script and Song’s continued thoughtful and nuanced exploration of modern romantic relationships. This comes after she explored similar material in the acclaimed 2023 film Past Lives. On Rotten Tomatoes, her latest enjoys a 78% critics’ score and a more lukewarm 66% from audiences.
Evans, Pascal, and Johnson remain three of the most widely known stars working in Hollywood today, and their star power alone is likely a major reason why so many viewers are checking Materialists out on streaming. For Pascal, Song’s film arrived just before his appearance in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) but after an acclaimed run in HBO’s The Last of Us, as well as appearances in Eddington (2025) and Gladiator 2 (2024).
For Evans and Johnson, Materialists marks a needed win. Though ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine (2024) was a hit, movies that Evans plays a more prominent role in haven’t been as successful, with Honey Don’t! (2025), Red One (2024), and Ghosted (2023) all falling a little flat. For Johnson, Materialists follows the disastrous performance of Madame Web (2024) and smaller movies like Daddio (2023) and Persuasion (2022).
It’s unclear what movie project Song will be tackling next, but the filmmaker is currently developing an e-sports drama called Damage, which will be executive produced by The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin. After her latest romcom, this new project is sure to arrive with a healthy amount of anticipation.
With Materialists already excelling worldwide, the film is now poised to be a big viewership hit when it does eventually arrive on HBO Max in the U.S.
