New Jennifer Lopez Movie Hitting Major Box Office Low Despite Oscar Buzz

Kiss of the Spider Woman will hit a major low during its box office debut. 2025’s Kiss of the Spider Woman adapts the 1992 stage musical adapting the 1976 novel, which was previously made into a movie in 1985. The Bill Condon movie, which stars Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh, generated Oscar buzz after its Sundance premiere in January.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, Kiss of the Spider Woman is projected to end its debut weekend with a 3-day domestic total of $1 million. Because it is playing in 1,330 theaters, this means that it will earn a per-screen average of $767 million.

If its projections hold through the end of Sunday, that total will mean that it will have earned the 267th worst debut per-screen average of all time, coming in just below the $770 per-screen average of the opening weekend of the 2021 Gerard Butler neo-noir movie Copshop.

While its debut results could fluctuate slightly from its current projections, the Jennifer Lopez movie will need to have a huge surge in order to avoid hitting this low, which would see it just barely coming out ahead of тιтles including the Zac Efron flop We Are Your Friends ($757) and Lisa Kudrow’s Marci X ($727), which has an 8% Rotten Tomatoes score.

In fact, if it hopes to stay out of the Bottom 300 debut per-screen averages of all time, it would need to outdo the $829 per-screen average of 2020’s Fatale, which would require it to earn an additional $102,000 overall.

Regardless of exactly where it lands by the end of its debut weekend, this per-screen average is a poor result for a new movie led by an A-list star. This is belied by the fact that it is struggling to compete with movies from 2020 and 2021, which were the years in which the box office was most heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, a great many of the other тιтles on the chart of the lowest per-screen average debuts were re-releases, including the 20th anniversary screening of Brokeback Mountain ($741), the 30th anniversary of When Harry Met Sally… ($238) and the 2025 re-release of The 40-Year-Old Virgin ($43).

Re-releases almost invariably perform worse than original releases, and if every re-release screening was removed from the chart, the debut per-screen average that the Kiss of the Spider Woman musical is on track to earn would sink to become at least the 187th worst of all time.
