Matthew McConaughey Shocked To Learn His Interstellar Character’s Full Name In Christopher Nolan Movie

Matthew McConaughey is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but even he can’t remember the name of one of his most well-known characters from the hit Christopher Nolan movie Interstellar. McConaughey most recently starred alongside America Ferrera in The Lost Bus, the docudrama and survival thriller based on accounts of a rescue that happened during the 2018 Camp Fire.

Featured by VT and Four Nine, McConaughey and Ferrera were prompted to quiz each other about some of their most famous movies. While Ferrera struggled to name all the discontinued Barbie dolls that appeared in Barbie, McConaughey couldn’t remember his Interstellar character’s full name. When initially asked the question, McConaughey said: “Maybe I did [know], but I don’t right now.

Ferrera provided him with the hint, “Jesus, Mary, and…,” and prompted McConaughey to guess, confused, “Cooper Joseph. Ferrera corrected him that the Interstellar protagonist’s name is Joseph Cooper, which surprised the actor. Cooper largely goes by his last name throughout Interstellar, even among family and close friends.

Interstellar has proven to be one of Christopher Nolan’s more divisive movies, but it has built itself an admirable legacy. Interstellar‘s re-release in IMAX at the end of 2024 drew large crowds, as few movies are better to be witnessed in this format. Nolan’s space odyssey epic is remembered for its spectacular visuals, terrifying scale, and the amount of scientific research that went into the premise.

Interstellar follows a former NASA pilot who comes out of effective retirement to undertake a dangerous new mission — traveling through a wormhole to search space for a new home for humanity when the Earth will soon be uninhabitable. This means leaving behind his two children, who become adults in what feels like a matter of hours to Cooper due to time dilation.

Interstellar also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, David Gyasi, and Matt Damon, as well as recent breakout star (at the time) Mackenzie Foy and an early-career Timothée Chalamet as the younger versions of Murph and Tom Cooper. Interstellar‘s lifetime worldwide gross is $759 million, and it holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Matthew McConaughey is a one-time Oscar winner for 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club. He is also known for movies such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Magic Mike, and the legendary TV show True Detective. He was also challenged with ranking these тιтles based on which he guessed had the highest IMDb score (and missed multiple times due to forgetting Dallas Buyers Club). Check out this full video below:

With a career as long and storied as McCounaghey’s, he is bound to forget a few details about even his own movies, especially when almost no one remembers Cooper from Interstellar by his first name.
